About the Course

Broaden your knowledge of art practices, collections, art criticism, techniques, ideas, materials and influences in both modern and historical art. Please note that there will be an additional entry charge for some exhibitions.

Do you want to explore art and how artists and art movements link together, both past and present, and gain a deeper understanding of modern art? This is a class which will broaden your knowledge of art practices, collections, art criticism, techniques, ideas, materials and influences in both modern and historical art. A popular, friendly and welcoming class which provides an insider's view of the art world and background information on individual exhibitions and artists.
All the visits are to galleries and museums based in London and the class covers a wide range of art practice, Fine Art, Painting, Sculpture, Installation, Drawing and Print, Film and Video, Performance, Ceramics, Design, Graphics, Architecture, Photography, Fashion and Textiles.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Develop confidence and knowledge in discussing artistic techniques and ideas with tutor, who is an artist, and other students.
Promote awareness of some of the permanent collections in London galleries and museums.
Develop an appreciation of a wide variety of art, historical to present day.
Question and appreciate the continuity of art and how art movements and artists link together.
Expand one's knowledge from traditional painting & sculpture through fashion, design, film, installation and contemporary art.
Class format and activities
Each week a visit is organised to a London gallery or exhibition. The first meeting will start at the college.
Teaching is both group and on an individual, one to one basis.
The tutor will give students handouts and background presentations.
Students negotiate individual learning goals with the tutor and record and assess these on individual learning plans.
A quiz is set at the end of each term based on the term’s visits.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
No previous experience is necessary, but a keen interest in contemporary and traditional art and design is useful.

What you need to know before you enrol
Please note that the course involves standing for up to 2 hours and comfortable shoes are advisable. Most galleries have wheelchair access.

What you will need for your class
Notebook and pen are useful
Please bring money for gallery admissions, travel and refreshments.
Membership of the Tate, RA or Art Fund is useful.
