About the Course

Explore various contemporary art galleries and exhibition spaces, commercial galleries and museums. Each week you will visit a different exhibition exploring a variety of themes, ideas, artists and fine art practices – such as painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, photography and film. The focus of the course is to discuss the works on display in an informed way. Most sessions include short talks on the artist/ works and themes as well as facilitated group discussion. Although the focus of the course is on contemporary art, sessions occasionally explore art produced during various periods of the 20th century.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Develop skills in being able to analyse and 'interpret' Contemporary art
Build on your knowledge of London's contemporary art scene
Keep in touch with current styles, trends, movements and emerging artists in the contemporary art world.
Develop confidence in talking about art
Class format and activities
You will be looking at, discussing and enjoying art in a variety of London public and commercial art galleries, museums and exhibition spaces. The first day of the course is held at Morley College where you will receive an induction and an itinerary of planned visits for the term. Subsequent lessons are held at various venues and usually begin with an introduction to the artist(s) and themes being explored. You will then have time to view artworks before discussing works on display through a facilitated group discussion. The aim of the sessions is to analyse and discuss the artworks within a supportive and friendly group environment. Students often find they are soon able to develop their own personal taste and appreciation of contemporary art.
For the first session come to the Camberwell Space, the new public gallery at Camberwell UAL.
Here are the details:
Exhibition: A History of Drawing
Address: Camberwell Space, Camberwell College of Arts, 45–65 Peckham Road, London SE5 8UF
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
No. This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in art. You do not need any prior knowledge of contemporary art.

What you need to know before you enrol
Many of the Art & Design studios have limited accessibility. If you have restricted mobility please contact the Art & Design Administrator on 02074501934 or Learning Support on 02074501835 before enrolling.

Most of the visits require a basic level of stamina as you will be standing and walking whilst viewing artworks. However, most venues have seating areas and/ or a café, where you can take a break whenever needed during the lesson. Most venues have a lift, however occasionally there are venues which do not have lift access.

What you will need for your class
You may wish to bring a notepad and pen to take notes. Most exhibitions are free to enter, occasionally there may be an entry charge (usually no more than one of the visits per term at the most). As the course takes place in a variety of locations in London, you may need an A-Z or map to help locate galleries you are unfamiliar with. You may also wish to bring a camera – please check with the gallery/ Tutor before a visit, however, to check whether photography is permitted.

What you can do next
Students often continue with further terms in this course as each term is different – an exhibition is never visited more than once.
Practicing artists have found this course very useful in being able to keep in touch with what’s happening in the London art scene and to help generate ideas and inform their own studio practice.
Students may wish to progress onto other art appreciation/ art theory courses.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
