About the Course

Studying in front of the actual works of art at Tate Britain, discover the history of British art from the Tudor period to the present day. From the hidden meanings in Elizabethan portraits, to the discovery of the English landscape, and on towards the effect of the Industrial Revolution on art, we will learn about the evolution of British art and its place in world culture. Fun and accessible, the course is suitable for anyone interested in art, culture or history, and no previous experience of art history or art appreciation is required.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Identify the work of a number of British artists from between the period 1500 to 2019
Place the works of a number of British artists in a social, historical and cultural context
Talk about British art between 1500 and 2019 in a logical and relevant way
Class format and activities
You will meet at the Tate Britain in London where your tutor will lead you in in a discussion on the possible meanings, purposes and histories of the works of art we are looking at.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
No previous experience of history, art history or art appreciation is required.

What you need to know before you enrol
Although portable seats might be available, please be aware that we will be walking between works of art in different galleries, and teaching will take place in the public spaces of the galleries of Tate Britain.

You will need a notebook and something to write with.
