Take your woodworking skills to the next level as you’re guided step-by-step through the different processes to create your own piece of furniture (a wooden seat with curved and upholstered elements).
This course is for those who’ve completed the beginner’s course, as well as those with an understanding of woodworking who’d like to fine tune their skills.
On this course you’ll learn how to make a beautifully crafted wooden seat using a wide range of hand tools, machine tools and advanced finishing techniques.
You’ll focus on developing your knowledge of woodworking and gain a more advanced understanding of furniture making - in a relaxed atmosphere with an experienced tutor.
On this course, you will:
- be inducted into our well-equipped product design workshops
- refresh your knowledge on using tools and equipment such as dimension saws, surface planers, thickness planers, spindle moulders, flatbed sanders, CNC and hand routers
- use equipment that may be new to you such as bag presses, steamers and jigs
- discuss the types of timber and ply layers most suitable for curved woodwork
- practise a variety of joints on your project and discuss the merits of each one
- build your confidence in using hand tools and woodworking equipment
- discuss job planning and calculating materials with easy to follow templates
- explore different finishing techniques for the wood and upholster your seat to make your piece truly unique.
You’ll be introduced to techniques through group demonstrations, samples, paper-based instructions and one-to-one feedback as your project develops.
What will you gain?
By the end of the course you’ll have developed your understanding of the different workshop processes and created a bespoke piece of furniture that shows how you’ve applied these processes to your project.
You’ll also leave with the confidence to develop your skills and apply your knowledge to further furniture and woodwork projects.
Entry requirement: You should have experience of woodworking gained from previous courses or personal projects.
Where you’ll learn: You will be based in the School of Architecture, Design and Built Environment on the City Campus.
