Full day Mokuhanga (Japanese woodblock printing) with artist Rachel Evans

Examples of the lovely work produced on previous workshops

Mokuhanga is an ancient and traditional form of Japanese woodblock printing. On this full day you will create a beautiful layered design.

Mokuhanga is an ancient and traditional form of Japanese woodblock printing dating back to the 8th century. The mokuhanga technique differs from other relief printing in that it uses water-based inks (we will be using watercolours in this workshop), which give beautifully delicate, transparent layers of colour.

This is a multi block technique, whereby the design is built up by printing simple shapes on top of each other.

Absolutely no previous experience of painting or drawing is necessary to enjoy this absorbing and relaxing workshop. These workshops are open to complete beginners as well as those who have some experience.

On this workshop you will design, carve and print your own design, burnishing by hand onto Western and Japanese papers.

What's included in the price?

All paper, wood, inks, and carving tools are provided by myself.
Things to bring:
- Your lunch
-Pencil, ruler, eraser.
-I would recommend you wear something that you don’t mind getting potentially a little bit messy, or if you have an apron you are most welcome to bring that.
-Something to take your finished prints home in such as a rigid A4 folder to keep them safe! They may still be slightly damp so we want to make sure they get home safely with you at the end of the session.
- A design measuring 11cm x 16 cm made up of 3 or 4 blocks of colour. Use simple shapes that can be layered on top of one another, or sit next to each other, as seen in the photos on the event page.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
