About the Course

Discover the pleasure of drawing with a sewing machine needle. This course will introduce students with a little or no experience of free motion quilting techniques. Students learn the basics of free motion machine quilting and may wish to make a machine quilted cushion or other decor items. Students should have some knowledge of how to use a sewing machine.

• Students will practice a variety of free motion techniques - background filling stitching and foreground motifs.
• Students will also learn layering techniques using both basting spray and traditional tacking.
• Simple finishing techniques will also be shown.
• Students will learn safe use of the sewing machine.

Class format and activities
This course will be on-line via a digital learning platform. This enables life camera connection via your computer, tablet or mobile phone. There will be tutor demonstrations, discussions, group discussions, one to one or smaller group discussions, show and tell in a supportive and constructive environment with your tutor.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
Students should be able to use a sewing machine with some confidence. Complete beginners to the sewing machine will find this course challenging.

What you need to know before you enrol
This course is on-line. Students will need access to an internet connection, a PC or laptop, tablet or smart phone. The class will take place using TEAMS.

What you will need for your class
You will will need dress weight or specialist patchwork fabric - plain, unprinted fabrics are best for seeing your stitching.
Upholstery fabrics are NOT suitable.
Fabrics can be recycled sheeting.
All fabrics should be pre-washed if possible.
2 or 4 Squares of fabric measuring at least 15” x 15” for practising, 2 or 4 Squares of fabric measuring at least 18” x 18”. 2 or 3 squares of 2 oz Wadding - 18” x 18” – cotton/polyester or polyester.
Please also bring the following items
250m matching thread for quilting – you may wish to use a slightly different colour to the background fabric to practice
505 Basting Spray.
Note/Sketch book and pencils and pens.
Sewing Kit – including scissors, needles, Stitch Ripper, pins and threads.
Basting spray 505 or threads for tacking. Basting Spray is available from quilt shops or on-line.
