About the Course

Free Machine Embroidery is basically drawing with your sewing machine using thread and fabric instead of pencil and paper and it can be so much fun!

Come along and learn how to sketch with your sewing machine to create a design of your choice on a cushion that you will complete within the workshop to take home and enjoy. Plus this is a perfect reason to search through your fabric stash or even better to go fabric shopping!
We will start by choosing a design from a range pre-pared by Karen, if you have something specific in mind please let us know when booking so that we can get it ready for your session. We will then transfer our designs and learn all about bondaweb and stabilisers (not the kind you had on your bike when you were little!).

We will complete a small practice sample before moving onto the cushion design and all being well by the end of the session you will leave with a completed envelope cushion with your very own free machine embroidered front.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

This workshop is suitable for anybody who is already confident at using a sewing machine for normal simple sewing i.e. you can thread it up and pretend to go in a straight line (there is no need to actually be able to do this straight stuff for this workshop!).

You need to bring 0.75m of a high percentage of cotton fabric for the cushion cover itself (background to your design). I would recommend a 100% cotton in a plain colour that compliments your other bits of fabric (or clashes if you are felling outlandish).

You also need to bring small amounts of cotton fabric for your design – fat quarters are ideal for this but fabric stash scraps are great too! How many is really up to you. We have some little bits if you are missing something and are always happy to do swapsies!

Please note polycottons are not ideal for this workshop as they tend to be thinner and therefore show through the fabric behind, and depending on quality may struggle with the heat of the iron required during the appliqué process.
We will provide your cushion inner, stabiliser, bondaweb, transfer equipment, designs, black thread (plus other colours but please bring you own if you are after something specific) and fabric for a sample piece.

Glasses are a must if you wear them, and we recommend a good nights sleep before you come as this is quite a long workshop to get your cushion finished before you leave! Occasionally we may run over a little if you have picked a complex design.

You will take away your completed cushion and inner, along with all the skills you have acquired during the workshop.

We cannot take any responsibility for the desperate need to go fabric shopping that may result from attending this workshop!
