About the Course

"I never travel without my diary. One should always have something sensational to read in the train."
Oscar Wilde

We offer an escape from your usual routine. The change of focus will allow you to tap into your creativity, whilst we provide experiences and activities to enhance your creative writing skills, giving you a space to begin or develop your own project.

We utilise and explore the wild beauty of hidden localities in the Peak District to inspire a diverse range of writing and welcome those from all stages and walks of life as long as you are happy to let your imagination take the reins.
The first evening and the following morning will concentrate on skills, starting with short writing exercises together, followed by a trips locally, to absorb the atmosphere and scenery, gathering inspiration for further writing. The second part of our main day allows time for reflective writing, with support and guidance, on areas such as structure, character development and plot. During your retreat, you will have a blend of time to write and time to share experiences and activities to stimulate your imagination and enhance your writing style.
Your stay at Foxes' Retreat will be in our Peak District farmhouse, catered in our farmhouse kitchen with organic, local produce for breakfast, lunch and supper.

Your tutor, Myzska, has wide ranging experiences of twenty years of teaching writing, and will combine these skills with activities similar to those found in university programmes - tailored to your experience and confidence levels. Our visiting writer, Ashley Claire, is often available to work with both the whole group and with individuals on specific areas of their writing.
We have both taught creative writing to a variety of ages and audiences, in classrooms, at art festivals and even in arid deserts! Our joint university interests range from Creative Writing to Medieval Manuscripts and Children's Literature, as well as a far wider personal interest in poetry, drama and prose.
A notebook accompanies us wherever we go, as moments caught unexpectedly are often sources of later inspiration. You will need to bring a notebook with you, as well as a laptop or tablet, if you prefer to use technology once into the flow of your writing.
Sharing your writing and reviewing the work of your fellow attendees will be an option, if you are comfortable with this, at various points in your retreat.

The programme leaders are currently involved in writing projects of our own; this is a passion we look forward to sharing with you.

As Oscar Wilde suggested, it is the capturing of unexpected moments that makes for great writing. We look forward to sharing these moments in your writing with you.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

Writers will be provided with supper on the first evening, as well as breakfast, lunch and supper on the middle day. We will finish with lunch on our final day of any course, to allow travel time home for our guests.

Dietary requirements will direct our meal planning, to include everyone in the sociable experience of sharing meals.

Accommodation is in our farmhouse; we have three doubles and a single set up as guest rooms, with two bathrooms on the first floor, and a downstairs cloakroom.

We are flexible with our use of the time on less clement days, and will ensure that there is at least a half day for writing, with support from the tutors, or alone if that is appropriate to the stage of writing for an individual.

Spare time can be spent in reflection, or walking locally, or can be for ongoing sharing of writing, or of other favourite readings. The last evening is set aside to share work more formally, as a group. During the last morning, writers are able to work with tutors to plan their next steps going forward, before leaving Foxes' Retreat to travel home with their inspiration for developing their next steps.

Thoroughly enjoyable experience. Plenty of time for writing and reflection in quiet country retreat, with advice and encouragement from Myszka. The food was delicious. Coffee and tea whenever needed. Comfortable nooks to settle and allow the creative juices to flow.

Thank you! It was a pleasure to meet your characters and I look forward to hearing of their exploits as you develop their stories.
Great writing!
