About the Course
Join pen and ink artist Nick Stewart for an afternoon fountain pen ink art workshop in his studio in Rochester, Kent. This is an experimental creative process exploring the use of ink in art.
What is Fountain Pen Ink Art?
For the past 3 years I have been investigating the properties of hundreds of fountain pen inks for use as a creative and inspirational medium - fine honing and utilising their unique chromatic behaviours and maximising the dramatic visual effects that ocurr when the inks are subjected to bleach.
What has come out of these investigations?
The most important outcome has been recognising the versatility of the medium to perfectly embrace both illustration (and watercolour) and calligraphy. But there are also very real possibilities for using the medium in fashion/textiles and more fine art based activities.
And the technical outcomes?
Being able to use the medium in negative - working from dark to light (bleach on ink) as well as in the positive - working light to dark (using inks as watercolours)
Being able to create visually exciting modern calligraphy
The afternoon workshop will run from 1400hrs to 1700hrs. 5 people maximum.
What will the workshops include?
An introduction - I will show you how to investigate an ink, explore it's chromatography and how it reacts with bleach. I will show you how to blend inks together and maximise the serendipity of the outcomes.
Swatch testing - I will show you how to emulate my swatch card techniques, how to maximise the chromatography within the inks and on the best paper for the job. You will learn how to apply bleach to your swatch card to give it that gold neon effect.
Modern Calligraphy - using automatic pens I will show you how to create my abstract lettering, how to blend inks together, apply bleach and incorporate metal dusts and carbon. I will show you how to create stunning shimmer calligraphy using Diamine shimmer inks.
