Description:

The course is based at Woodland Ways yard in beautiful SSSI woodland in Worcestershire. You will be guided by David Llewellyn, a full time woodsman who started his own business in 2001 making traditional woodland crafts. He has since developed his business to incorporate woodland management and forestry and is well respected locally fulfilling contracts for Wildlife Trusts, Natural England, The Environment Agency as well as many private customers.

The course is run at the pace of the individual with time taken to ensure each person is at the right place at the same time. Starting by selecting your timber you are taken through the process of constructing your own gate hurdle, including cleaving with wedges, cleaving with a fro and using a draw knife whilst using the various jigs around the yard to work your wood. There is also the opportunity to split hazel and weave a wattle panel as part of the group. It is a two day course starting at 9am and ending around 5pm. Our yard is located within the grounds of The Frank Chapman Centre and we can recommend accommodation there if it is required.

Courses run throughout the year so please get in touch for future dates.

What's included in the price?

All tools and materials are included as well as endless cups of tea and coffee. Please bring your own lunch. You will need outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear.

Great Course,

Dave's enthusiasm for and experience in the subject really stands out. I learned a great deal in the two days and was really happy with the end product that we took home. I'd recommend this course to anyone with an interest in the subject. Definitely one of the better courses I've ever attended.

I went last weekend. Brilliant. Everything exceeded my expectations. Dave straightforward approach and enthusiasm for the woods, the wood , the tools and those learning a new skill was commendable.
His patience , helping me through the whole process is much appreciated. All of this in a beautiful surroundings. Hurdles in the garden and i am still smiling at them. If wondering whether to go, do it, you wont regret a thing.

Attended the gate hurdle weekend course down at the woodland ways yard and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Dave has a clear passion for all things woodlands and is obviously committed to the sustainability and profitability of the UKs woodland! He is a fantastic teacher and has a great ability for tailoring his tuition to the abilities of the person.

I would thoroughly recommend this course for those looking to get an introduction to green wood working or those looking for a unique outdoor experience with the bonus of construction your own gate hurdle!

-

Excellent course for learning the basic skills of green wood working and how to use the different tools. David is very knowledgeable and friendly.

-

A fantastic location with the chance for a scene setting educational woodland walk and then settling down to watch David's demonstration of each stage followed by the chance to try out and build capability as we learned to create our rustic hurdles. The manner of teaching and engagement was friendly and informative with David's focus and attention adjusted to suit the pace and skillset of each participant.
A really worthwhile experience that opened up a whole new world of possibilities. Strongly recommend

This was an excellent course for both beginners and the more experienced woods-person. Dave is an excellent teacher and really supportive as well as extremely knowledgeable. The course is based in a beautiful SSSI woodland which we also had the opportunity to explore and learn about. I would highly recommend this course.

I wanted to further develop my woodland skills and learn how to cleave Sweet chestnut and make a gate hurdle and found this course. Dave is an excellent tutor, true woodsman and endless knowledge of woodland management and carrying on the traditional crafts he learnt from his father. With endless brews, lots of encouragement and patience along with some great conversations and laughter the three of us all managed to produce a very reasonable gate hurdle and have benefitted from Dave's knowledge. I would highly recommend this course to anyone and look forward to maintaining a connection with Woodland Ways.

Really enjoyed this course! Simple steps, thorough explanations and David patience made the process of making my gate hurdle a pleasure - but my arms arched from the work, but in a nice way. I felt confident and able to repeat the process, having learnt the basic green woodworking skills.

My own work space, the stove burning brewing plenty of cups of tea and some fun banter with the other participants made the weekend and the best bit was loading the car roof with my completed hurdle ready to plant in the garden, where it still is (still solid) today.

I attended the Foundation Course in Greenwood Working six years ago. I really enjoyed the course. It gave me a real insight into the traditional skills necessary for greenwood working including how to use, safely, a wide range of tools.
David Llewellyn is a hands on tutor who managed the course with patience and humour. You WILL achieve your course objectives!
Throughout the course, David introduced us to challenges and benefits of effective woodland management, particularly in respect of SSSI woodland. This, together with David's anecdotes, added real value and helped put the objectives of the course into perspective over the two days.
I would recommend the course whether you have any level of woodland management experience or are simply curious about finding out more about the little known skills of greenwood working!
