Floral art for beginners
This course aims to demonstrate to students how to use plant material to its best advantage, exploring how to select and condition the plant material they will be using. This will include a woodland walk to forage materials and pruning techniques will be explored.
The course will also cover seasonal designs with a focus on the theme of Autumn/Winter, principles and elements of design within floristry, floristry techniques, wiring, spiralling and gift wrapping your products.
Week One Students will create an arrangement in Oasis floral foam, using seasonal flowers and foliage. Students will explore how to use a variety of different containers and accessories. Students will explore how the colour wheel is used within the floristry industry and how to incorporate different shaped designs and colours based on a specific finished arrangement. A practical session with tutor demonstrations.
Week Two Students will cover the basics in wiring techniques and create a buttonhole, corsage or accessory piece that can be worn to any occasion. The theme of autumn/winter will be used as a strong design focus, using glittered twigs, beads, buttons and foraged seed heads and foliage. Students will be required to bring flowers, foliage and an item they wish decorate. A practical session with tutor demonstrations.
Week Three Students will create a hand-tied posy of flowers demonstrating the spiralling technique. Students will focus on Christmas gifts and table centrepieces in this lesson. Students will explore how to gift wrap an aqua bouquet (hand tied arrangement in a water bubble) using ribbon to create a bow and incorporating accessories into the design. Students will use techniques from week 2 to customise their design with beads, twigs, baubles and cinnamon sticks. Students will be required to bring flowers and foliage, a small amount of Cellophane, wire edged Christmas ribbon, watering can/jug, 2 sheets of tissue paper and string.
Week Four Students will be set a design brief given on week 3 which will involve a theme and the option of creating one of three designs they have learnt over the first 3 weeks of the course, which are:
◾An arrangement in oasis floral foam
◾A wired accessory piece
◾A hand tied posy
Students will make a mood board encompassing the theory design basics learnt so far and the reason why they have chosen to create their specific piece. This will be an optional homework task on week 3. A Practical lesson where students will be free to create their chosen piece based on the theme 'winter wonderland'.
