About the Course

This course will enable you to film and record an effective interview for broadcast or online use. We cover camera techniques to obtain correct exposure, framing, lighting and composition of the main subject plus use of professional audio recording techniques.

You will learn how to record interviews using directional microphones as well as wireless microphones. Additionally you will learn basic editing to synch audio and video.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Use several camera controls to obtain a well exposed image.
Learn about framing and composition to produce a nice interview shot.
Use sound for video production (e.g. recording interview, voice over).
Use basic post-production techniques to synch audio and video images.
Class format and activities
In this course you will be using digital cameras, directional microphones as well as wireless microphones to record audio. Mac computers and video editing software (Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2015) will also be available. The tutor will demonstrate the use of the audio and video equipment as well as technical aspects of conducting and shooting an interview. Tutor will also give short talks and screen excerpts of films to illustrate examples. You will explore different techniques and approaches to conduct and record an interview at a professional level. The tutor will guide you through the stages of pre-production, production and post-production to produce a short interview.

There will be an emphasis on group work and sharing knowledge and experience through practical exercises and group discussion. The tutor will facilitate group discussions, and work with students in groups.
Learning will be supported by course hand-outs, and access to online material covered in class.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
The course is suitable for complete beginners, or those with some experience in video-making who want to learn new skills or explore new ideas. Knowledge of using Mac computer is useful but not a requirement. As part of the course you will be asked to read tutorials, take notes and discuss related topics, therefore, all students must be able to speak, read and write in English.

What you need to know before you enrol
Learning will take place in classroom and additional locations (e.g. college premises, exterior locations). You will need a moderate level of fitness to carry and use cameras, and set up equipment such as tripods. You will also be working in groups therefore it is essential to work harmoniously as part of a team.

What you will need for your class
You do not need to bring your own camera to class as the college will provide all necessary equipment for exercises and projects. However you can bring your own camera and tripod but please bear in mind that it is advisable that you know the basic operations of your own camera as the tutor will prioritise his time on class exercises and explaining the equipment already available in college. You will also have access to Apple Mac computers during the class.
