About the Course

This course will introduce you to HD video production through a series of exercises and workshops. You will learn how to organise your ideas, plan and shoot sequences as well as develop your camera, sound and editing skills. By the end of the course you should have successfully shot and edited a short film project. If you are not entitled to a reduced fee but are finding it difficult to pay for your course in one go, we can offer a Staged Payment Agreement to split the costs into three payments if your course(s) costs £200 or more. Please talk to a member of enrolment staff about how your payments would be structured. You are liable for all payments under this agreement, even if you stop attending your class.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Use digital video cameras
Use basic post-production techniques (e.g. transitions, titles)
Use sound for video production
Plan and develop ideas for moving image sequences
Use software to import and export video and other material
Edit a short video project
Work harmoniously as part of a team.
Class format and activities
In this course you will be using digital video cameras, computers and video software (Adobe Premiere Pro CS5). The tutor will give short talks and demonstrate technical aspects of film and video-making. You will explore different techniques and approaches to basic camera and editing through practical exercises and a short production project. The tutor will give guidance and support in how to work through the stages of pre-production, production and post-production to produce a short film.

There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge and experience through discussion, show and tell, and group crit. The tutor will facilitate group discussions, and work with students one-to-one and in groups.

Learning will be supported by course hand-outs, and the tutor will provide links to online resources.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
The course is suitable for complete beginners, or those with some experience in film and video-making who want to learn new skills or explore new ideas. Good computer skills are essential for making this course a success. Therefore, all students are expected to be confident in using a computer for tasks such as word processing, saving, managing files, browsing the internet etc. As part of the course you will be asked to read tutorials, take notes and discuss related topics, therefore, all students must be able to speak, read and write in English.

What you need to know before you enrol
Learning will take place in computer studio and additional locations (e.g. classrooms, exterior locations). You will need a moderate level of fitness to carry and use cameras, and set up equipment such as tripods.

What you will need for your class
It would be helpful for you to bring a pen and notepad, as you may wish to take notes. Also recommended is a storage device such as USB Memory stick (minimum 8GB) or mini hard drive, for storage of work and final export of video films.

You do not need to bring your own camera to classes, as the college will provide all necessary equipment for exercises and projects. You will also have access to computers during the class (Apple Macs or PCs).

Computer study forms a significant part of the course, and you may wish to revise and practise at home to reinforce what they have learned during the lesson. Information about computers and software will be provided by the tutor.
What you can do next
The course provides an excellent starting point for other film and video-making courses. If you wish to develop your skills in editing, you could continue with Introduction to Video Editing with Premiere Pro, which is particularly useful to those students who want to use their editing skills professionally or improve their employability. Please don’t hesitate to ask the tutor for advice and guidance.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
