About the Course
Felting and Free Motion Machine Embroidery Workshop. Creating Watercolours in Wool!
Crafts in the Valley offers this creative workshop at the Creative with Nature studio gallery in Todmorden, West Yorkshire.
Full Day Workshop starting at 10.30am and finishing at approximately 4.30pm.
In this workshop you will have the opportunity to experiment with a range of textiles skills including wet felting, needle felting, hand stitched embroidery and free motion machine embroidery. By the end of the day you will have created a beautiful piece of felted artwork.
Firstly you will choose from a selection of beautiful, brightly dyed Merino wool, Alpaca or wool from British sheep, that are naturally coloured and just as lovely. All wool fibres are purchased from the wonderful Wingham Wool Works.
A flat piece of felt will be made using the simple wet felting process of manipulating and matting fibres together using soapy water and a bit of elbow grease!
In the afternoon, extra detail will be added to the felt using needle felting and machine embroidery. Most workshop participants opt to create a beautiful piece of felted art, some prefer to turn their felt into a more functional item. The choice is yours! Lots of inspiration and top quality materials will be available for you to work with.
This workshop is offered to individuals and private groups and designed for art and craft lovers, beginners or experienced crafters, and for those who simply want to enjoy a creative day out. The workshops have proved popular with mothers and daughters, couples and family and friends who wish to spend some quality time together. Lots of participants come and their own and enjoying meeting friendly, new people.
The workshops are run from the light and airy Creative with Nature gallery in Todmorden, the neighbouring town to Hebden Bridge in the Calder Valley. The gallery is an exciting and inspiring venue with changing exhibitions and willow weaving work created by local artists and crafts people.

I can't recommend Melanie's workshops onboard the lovely Crafty Snail narrowboat highly enough! I have taken her workshops in both felting (with a friend) and mosaics (with my husband) and have all thoroughly enjoyed them, coming home at the end of each day with pieces of art we were proud to put up on the wall despite being complete beginners. Melanie herself is a fantastic teacher and a pleasure to spend time with and the workshops are incredibly good value, especially when you consider the lovely lunch, drinks and snacks included. Treat yourself or someone you love to a relaxing crafty day in beautiful, unique surroundings now!

Having attended 2 felt crafty days, I would highly recommend Melanie's workshops. I was a complete beginner and came home with 2 felt pictures, having been guided carefully at each stage of creating the natural world scenes from scratch. It was great to have a very small group on board the Crafty Snail, with plenty of room to work despite the narrow space, and a lovely choice of materials to choose from. The supply of warm drinks and goodies to nibble on helped the concentration, whilst the woodburning stove kept us cosy. We enjoyed a delicious meal at the Olive Branch during lunchtime before returning to find our pictures ready for the next stage of creation. I found both occasions full of inspiration and they built my confidence in art and craft.
