Felted hat using technique of fibre lamination

About the Course
I am running this class in order to raise some funds towards cancer treatment of Katya Vetrova, Russian feltmaker. I learned this technique from Katya and have her permission to teach.
You will learn how to create a soft well draped, beautiful and high-quality felted hat, create a smooth and textured decor with the help of fibres, yarns, nepps and even finished felt. How to calculate coefficient of shrinkage and build a hat pattern to create seamless well fitted hat.
You will learn non traditional felting technique called fibre lamination which is very popular amogst Eastern European feltmakers. It allows to create a soft, light, well draped, easy to stretch felt which also keeps shape well and as a result is widely used in making of felted clothes. The technique of fiber lamination makes it possible to create two-sided hat, changing the style and image.
What to Bring:
I will provide light refreshement and main materials necessary to create a hat. You will need to bring the following materials if you have:
little bit of silk or bamboo fibre;
any wool yarns;
some scraps of felt;
few scraps of heavy silk, like habotai;
resist, 1m x1m - laminate floor insulation;
2 hand-size towels; and light lunch;
We will be using sander just for 5 minutes to speed up the felting process. If you have a sander for felting, then it would be great if you brought with you. This technique involves not just wool but also other fibres which is much easier to felt with the little bit of help from sander. If you prefer not to use sander, then I will show techniques to avoid it.
Please contact me 3 weeks before the workshop to discuss the colours available and plan your project.

I'm new to working with felt and found the workshop very interesting. Lena is an excellent teacher and breaks down difficult concepts and ideas into easy to understand instructions. She takes her time and made sure that everyone was able to produce some lovely flowers. The afternoon was really fun and friendly I will definitely be attending more of her workshops.

I really enjoyed this class and will definitely be back for more. Lena was so organised and managed to tailor her approach to everyone’s level of skill and ability. I really enjoyed having a go and made 3 beautiful flowers that I am so proud of. Her friendly approach and attitude made a long day seem anything but. Have a go, you will love it too.

I am very new to felting, but I am definitely hooked, the wet felting flower workshop was brilliant. Lens is a very talented teacher, who also listens to her pupils. It was a very relaxing day, and I came away with a fantastic flower made by me!! an original. and I also met some very nice people with whom I have so much in common.
Roll on the next class !

A wonderful workshop whether you are new to wet felting or have tried it before. Always a relaxed, friendly, informative experience. Lena shares her huge knowledge so openly and encourages you to experiment with colour and textures of your own choosing. It's a fabulous feeling to create your own unique piece of wearable art and gain new skills at the same time. A great way to de-stress too!

This was my second workshop with Lena; the first was needle felting. Both workshops were great. Everything is explained and you have time to create, you're not rushed at all. You even have time to break for coffee and cake. I would recommend any of Lena's workshops and will probably attend more myself.

It is a while back I did this course but it's the most memorable course I have ever done. I never worked with wool before and now I am addict working with wool. I was amazed what a beautiful flower I made in just a few hours. Lena is very patient, explaining how to use the wool. She is a fantastic teacher knowing exactly what she is doing and helping everybody when they need help. I highly recommend this course.
