About the Course

An opportunity for adults and children (6 years+) to learn together. You work on different projects each session. Adults must enrol both themselves and their child/children. There is a charge for clay.

This course offers a unique opportunity for children and adults to learn ceramics together in a encouraging and friendly atmosphere. Families will be introduced, through project work, to a wide range of making, decorating and glazing techniques. Through exploring and developing technical and design skills students will learn to express individual character within their work. New and returning families work alongside each other in a mutually supportive environment in which you will learn both from your tutor and each other.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Students will develop fundamental craft skills in a range of ceramic techniques e.g. pinch forming, coiling, slab-building, press-moulding, modelling, throwing, slip decoration and glazing.
Develop individual creativity in ceramics
Demonstrate awareness of Health and Safety issues in ceramics through safe studio practice, with consideration towards others.
Class format and activities
Each session you will be introduced to new methods of making and decorating through a project theme. Your tutor will discuss the theme and demonstrate the techniques involved, then you will have the opportunity to develop your skills using the methods demonstrated. Both adults and children work on their own pieces. The themes are wide ranging, giving scope for all levels of ability, and are appropriate for both adults and children. There is reference material provided, which relates to the themes in order to inform and inspire ideas. After tea break you will continue with your project as well as glazing the work produced in the previous lesson. Your tutor will give individual guidance throughout the session and personal creativity is encouraged.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
