There’s nothing like quality family time and what better way to spend it than getting back to nature.
We’ve designed this course with families in mind, and for that reason it’s suitable for children and adults alike. The course is a good introduction to the wonders of bushcraft and will cover some of the basic elements. Over the day we’ll cover fire lighting, shelter building and tree and plant identification.
After an initial safety briefing and a cuppa around the campfire, our instructors will teach you basic knots and lashings used in bushcraft – these will come in handy when constructing your shelters later on. We’ll then give you a chance to test what you have learnt as you’ll be putting up a basha (tarp). You will then be taken on a nature walk through the woods, where we will be looking at the various trees and plants and how to distinguish between them as well as some of their uses in bushcraft. We will then harvest some saplings to make slingshots from – you’ll get a chance to and test them out in the afternoon.
The afternoon will start with a look at the various different types of natural shelters used in bushcraft and wilderness living and you will construct a leaf litter shelter using what nature has to offer. Once your shelter is finished it’s on to fire lighting. We will go through the basic principals of fire lighting, and then it’s over to you to light your own fire without matches!
Over the course of the day you will learn how to:
- Safely use knives and saws including cutting techniques
- Tie useful knots and lashing
- Construct a weatherproof shelter (leaf litter)
- Identify useful trees and plants for bushcraft
- Make a slingshot
- Light a fire without matches (methods include flint & steel and fire steel)
