About the Course

Exploit the behavioural properties and qualities of various materials to be shaped in different ways and explore ideas of rhythm and repetition to create a range of samples with a variety of potential applications. Stitch, slash and layer and experiment with faux chenille. Fold, pleat and tuck to create samples of manipulated, rhythmic 3D structures and surfaces. Initial experiments will utilise paper as a means to explore form before moving into sampling different techniques in selected fabrics. You will be encouraged to collect and work from personal imagery and source material to provide a framework for the development of ideas. More experienced learners will be able to begin to adapt techniques to individual interests and personal ideas. Suitable for all levels.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Use a range of techniques for manipulating textiles into 2 and 3 dimensional surfaces and structures
Exploit the properties of different fabrics to behave in particular ways
Create a range of 2 and 3D fabric samples with an emphasis on rhythm and repetition
Use stitching, slashing and cutting techniques in an experimental way
Use a variety of folding and pleating techniques including using a pleating machine
Class format and activities
Demonstrations, group and individual support and discussion and illustration with samples will guide you through the various processes. There will also be visual presentations to introduce you to the work of various designers and makers using these techniques and you will be able to see how these techniques can be applied to the creation of textiles and to related areas; such as textile jewelry, surface design, fashion and interior items, art and installation.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
