About the Course

An inspiring painting day workshop for beginners or intermediate levels, if you're looking to try a portrait for the first time or improve your portrait painting skills. Mark will demonstrate and guide you through his well structured approach to painting a portrait, breaking it down into easy to follow steps that will cover everything from the colour palette and mixing skin tones to working tonally developing the structure of the head and creating a good likeness.

What to bring:

Good high quality A4 head and shoulders photographic reference or good range of high resolution images will be available.
One pre-primed and grounded canvas or board, Approx size 50cm x 40cm.

A selection of long handle short flat hog paint brushes for oil painters or long handle short flat synthetic acrylic brushes for acrylic painters, in a range of sizes from 2-12, also a small round size 1 synthetic brush.

Palette knives - Winsor and newton sizes 20 and 22 or similar.

For oil painters - Zest-It painting medium or a similar low odour thinners and linseed oil or alternatively just Liquin original.

For oil painters, a dipper/pot to hold the thinners.

A good size flat mixing palette for oil painters, preferably not paper palettes.

Preferably a stay wet palette and fine mist water sprayer for acrylic painters.

Oil or acrylic colours as follows - titanium white, lemon yellow, cadmium red, alizarine crimson, burnt umber, french ultramarine.

A good size jar for low odour thinners/white spirit substitute for oil painters or water to clean brushes, some cloths or plenty of tissues to wipe brushes clean. Sticks of charcoal (optional).

If you’re trying oils for the first time all materials apart from canvases or boards can be supplied for use on the day at additional cost of £10.

Terms - Fee is payable on booking. If, having booked, you cancel your booking, we are unable to offer a refund. However, you may nominate someone else to attend the workshop or class in your place by notifying us using the contact page on the Micklems Farm website. We reserve the right to cancel a workshop up to 48 hours prior to the workshop date. We will only cancel due to insufficient places sold and you will be refunded the full amount paid.
