About the Course

Explore heat transfer printing on man-made fabrics and the creative possibilities of collaging elements together directly onto the cloth. Heat transfer printing is an instant process which will transform your fabric with luscious layers of colour and mark. Dysperse dyes are applied to paper through printing or painting, then transferred to fabric using the heat press. Flat objects such as stencils, can be used both as a resist and to print from. You will be shown a range of approaches and combinations from the hand painted to the use of photocopy resists. A flexible, themed mini project and supportive paper based exercises, will introduce the design process taking you into practical sampling on cloth and you will be encouraged to collect, and explore visual ideas in a project notebook/sketchbook. Experimentation will lead to a personal choice of outcome which may be a collection of experimental samples, and for the more experienced: a decorative panel, scarf or a piece of transformed clothing. Environmentally friendly as a print process, heat transfer is also an excellent way to upcycle used mandmade fabric and transform old garments.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Record and develop ideas to a set theme in a project notebook/sketchbook
Use a range of approaches and methods for making images and pattern for heat transfer printing
Use disperse dyes to layer shape, colour and mark
Create experimental samples or other outcome of choice
Exhaust dye to minimise waste
