About the Course

Learn tapestry weaving on a simple frame using cotton warps and colourful wools. The weaving of simple shapes builds confidence, leading to the exploration of pattern and more complex motifs. Experienced weavers are supported in their realisation of personal projects.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Beginners will complete an introductory course in tapestry techniques that will include warping up, knotting on, how to handle bobbins, weave a variety of shapes, hatching and spotting
Intermediates will explore a variety of textural techniques, working on a project of their own choice
Advanced learners will pursue personal projects and explore new techniques and methods, as appropriate, Advanced techniques could include translation of an image chosen by the student or the exploration of a subject that could be expressed in tapestry.

Class format and activities
As a beginner you will warp up a frame and hand-knot a sampler tapestry under guidance, progressing to weave a tapestry. As a more advanced student you will be encouraged to create tapestry on a larger scale , perhaps using more unusual materials and techniques. All students are encouraged to develop their own creativity, and since all levels work in the same studio they benefit from each other's work.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
No previous experience of tapestry is necessary but an interest in drawing or design is helpful.

What you need to know before you enrol
This course takes place in the textile studio, sitting on stools.
The class is situated on the second floor of the Nancy Seear Building. There is partial disabled access via a stair lift.
