About the Course

Find out all about monotype on this course, with the opportunity to try out different ways of working in monotype and in both black and white and colour.

By the end of the course you will be able to
• Make monotype prints using black and/or coloured inks
• Understand the important key factors in making successful one off prints
• Use the printmaking equipment and workshop safely
• Develop and broaden existing visual language and mark making in relation to monotype work

Class format and activities
Students will be using polycarbonate plates and ink, tools and mark making devices and general studio equipment to explore different ways of making monotype prints.
Teaching is both in groups and on an individual, one-to-one basis, with technical and critical advice depending on your needs. The tutor will give some demonstrations, a presentation and lead a group discussion.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
No previous experience of printmaking is necessary, but an interest, or experience of drawing or design is useful. You may have some previous experience and want to develop and extend your own choice ideas into this process.

What you need to know before you enrol
This course is offered onsite at Morley during Covid 19 restrictions. You will need to bring a face covering and rubber/ nitrile gloves and your own apron or coverall. Health & Safety information will be given at the start of the course and subsequent lessons where necessary. You will be asked to sign a form declaring that you agree to follow procedures as advised. Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy, and some may cause irritation in very rare cases. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant or have any sensitivities and they will advise you as to necessary precautions.

Note: at present there is no wheelchair access to the print studio, and the studios are on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building. If you have any mobility issues please contact the department prior to enrolling.

What you will need for your class
Please bring pencils, a variety of paintbrushes, a sketchbook or notebook and a portfolio. You may want to experiment with the use of textured materials, rags and cloths and could bring in your own choice of any materials that can make marks or impressions in ink. The course fee includes most studio consumables (basic inks, solvents etc) but you will have to pay for paper, which is available to buy in the department at cost price.
