Techniques for working with a range of different materials will be introduced and explored in the early sessions of the term and there will be the opportunity to develop a themed project as the course progresses.

Alternative approaches are demonstrated for a variety of both wet and dry drawing materials: for example, graphite, charcoal, oil pastels, inks, pens, coloured pencils, collage and mixed media.

Different tools and varied applications are explored: for example, smooth flowing line with graphite or brush; textured marks with pastels or charcoal. With inks, stencilling and brush work can produce sharp and soft edges, fine gradations of tone can be represented, or dripping, pouring and bleeding techniques can give dramatic effects. Varied surfaces and papers will also be sampled for their different effects.

Aspects of composition, form, tone, texture and pattern will be explored through guided exercises and observational drawing. Varied media will be used to make quick observational studies as well as more developed abstract or figurative drawings. Throughout the course, reference will be made to contemporary as well as earlier artists through slide talks and demonstrations.

Regular group discussions facilitated by the tutor will encourage you to evaluate your own progress and that of your fellow students, sharing discoveries and learning from one another.
