Experimental Drawing and More Mark Making - Nottingham Trent University

This course aims to provide a deeper insight into experimental drawing and mark making in an encouraging and gently challenging way.

It’s an ideal opportunity to enhance the skills gained from the ‘Experimental Drawing and Mark Making’ course.

It will suit those who have experience in drawing already and are looking to reflect and develop ideas and work, with extra support and guidance.

Drawing and mark making are fundamental to creative practice, whatever your discipline.

They help you build on the intrinsic skills of looking, feeling and responding, encouraging you to develop your approach and express emotion.

The course will help to enhance your awareness and knowledge, encourage participation, experimentation and reflection whilst exploring the fundamentals of energy, the organic self, the sensory self and the expression of self.

It will start by refreshing your skills with quick mark making exercises and turning them into the beginnings of a drawing.

You will then move quickly on to exploring your own ideas and areas of interest.

It’s experimental in approach but you will be working in a more focused and considered way, taking your drawings and mark making a step further and concentrating on your own vision for your work.

During the course you will:

- complete contemporary drawing exercises in dry and wet media
- explore mark making using all your senses
- record your mark making through movement, from the miniscule to the full body
- create marks using rhythm, repetition and small changes
- engage with intention, intuition, instinct and memory
- reflect on your previous drawings and investigate areas you’d like to develop
- explore colour, scale, texture, placement, space and composition
- use a range of materials and tools, widening your techniques and processes
- gain a deeper understanding to developing your approach to mark making and creating successful, intuitive artwork.

You will be encouraged to explore the possibilities and potential within your own work, taking part in group discussions, as well as time with the tutor to outline your progress and reflect on your interests, ideas and discoveries from the previous course.

You will be taught specific skills related to your own requirements, as well as receiving support by drawing upon the experience of others in the group.

Ideally you will bring with you projects and ideas you are currently working on or ideas you are interested in learning how to develop.

What will I gain?

By the end of the course, you will have consolidated your drawing and mark making skills and completed a range of creative exercises to help release your body so that you can continue to make marks unhindered.

You will also leave with a series of sketches, artwork in development and ideas to continue working on.
