About the Course

Generate a series of test blocks exploring how to achieve interesting effects by etching the surface of the lino using a caustic solution. Experiment with different materials to mask out areas of the block, by adding wax, tape, varnish and Vaseline to the lino, this will disrupt the etching process to create a range of different tonal marks on the block. Once processed these can be inked up and printed. Continue by creating a larger scale block employing your preferred marks to create landscapes, sky-scapes, architectural effects or other abstract patterns in a more considered design, print and over print in a combination of colours to produce exciting artwork.

By the end of the course you will be able to
• make a series of test plates applying the caustic etching process using various masking out materials
• learn how to mix up a caustic solution safely and apply to lino blocks • to create graded etch marks
• ink up the lino tests in different colours
• over print different plates using a simple registration with various colours to create exciting art works
• understand and adhere to H and S in using caustic solution at home

Class format and activities
Learners will make a series of test plates using different materials, including: Vaseline, wax , tape, stop out varnish, these are applied to the surface of the lino plate in various ways , the caustic solution etches into the exposed areas of the lino plate and the masked areas resist the etching process leaving areas un-etched.
Once inked these plates are inked up they create interesting graded marks that can be manipulated with further etching or cutting. Using a simple registration technique the plates can be overprinted in different tonal colours to produce interesting effects
Making tests will determine the outcomes of the different approaches, and also give a good indication as to the amount of etching time that would be required to achieve desired results.
Larger plates can be planned using the tests plates as a guide to attain more specific marks to create interesting effects for land, sea and sky scapes.
Constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor will help you succeed during the class.
