About the Course

One day encaustic art workshop with Toni Peers at Flatford Mill, run by the Field Studies Council.

If you are interested in creating beautifully vivid pictures but don’t have the confidence, or you would like to add a new medium to your artistic palette, why not take the opportunity to learn encaustic art. Encaustic art, or painting with molten wax, is a modernised version of an ancient art form. We will use such tools as small irons and a heated stylus to melt the beeswax which will create vivid pictures, with added texture as the wax sits on the surface of the card rather than being absorbed.

Toni Peers has been teaching crafts at a variety of venues for over 10 years as part of her craft business called Curly Girly Crafts. She has a City and Guilds qualification in teaching adults as well as vast experience in running a variety of classes including, encaustic art, enamelling, felt making, flamework (making glass beads) and silver clay. Toni enjoys teaching tailored classes at her home studio as well as working with larger groups at venues such as Flatford Mill where students can take inspiration from the beautiful surroundings. Toni has been accepted into the Guild of Essex Craftsmen for her skills in enamelling and encaustic art, she is also part of the Encaustic art teaching network.

Flatford Mill lies at the heart of the Dedham Vale, on the banks of the River Stour near the Suffolk-Essex border. The Centre buildings, particularly the Mill and Willy Lott’s House, are instantly recognisable since they feature in many paintings by John Constable. The rich mosaic of lowland landscapes, wildlife habitats and places of historic interest are all reflected in our extensive programme of courses. The Centre is located between Colchester and Ipswich and is about 10 miles from each, approximately 2 miles from the A12.
