This exciting day course in enamelling on copper explores the skills and techniques of kiln enamelling, a colourful jewellery course brought to you by Eleanor Watson from The Jewellery Boat.
We'll be exploring enamelling step by step, learning to fuse finely powdered enamel onto the surface of copper to create a beautiful glossy glassy surface. These ancient techniques were first used by the Chinese, Greeks, Celts and Egyptians to decorate metal and add colour to metal jewellery and other precious objects.
If you love working with colour you will enjoy enamelling; the combinations are endless, the results swift and exciting to see as they emerge from the kiln. We will experiment with a range of simple decorative techniques to create your own one-off pieces to make your own unique jewellery or small pictures.
On this day course you will learn to:
Prepare copper for enameling
Make several sample pieces using a range of techniques
Explore the use of opaque and transparent enamels
Use decorative inclusions (e.g. frit, glass threads, millefiori, and copper wire)
Cover health and safety and the kiln firing process
Explore colour, and surface designs with stencils, printing and drawing
Design at least one final piece to finish and mount on jewellery findings by the end of the day (most people make 2 or 3 or more...!)
A supply of silver-plated jewellery findings will be available on which to mount your sample pieces and information will be provided on suppliers of enameling equipment and jewellery findings should you decide you want to pursue your new hobby.
Plenty of tea and coffee and biscuits will also be provided, enameling is thirsty work!
We limit each workshop to a maximum of 6 people to ensure individual attention and faster learning.
What's included in the price?
All materials are included as well as a supply of jewellery findings to finish your pieces so you can wear them home.
Plenteous supplies of tea, coffee and biscuits.
You may either bring your own packed lunch or go out at lunchtime to enjoy one of the multitude of cafes on Stoke Newington Church Street, or head for Clissold Park for some time out in the "countryside" over lunch.
