About the Course
This workshop is designed to teach you all the techniques you need to produce clear and vivid prints from botanical materials on fabric. This is a contemporary adaptation of the ancient tradition of dyeing cloth with plant pigments. No dyes or inks are used, the colour comes directly from the leaves themselves, which we will gather from the beautiful gardens here at Claydon Estate.
This course is suitable for absolute beginners but will also be entirely relevant to those wishing to improve, especially those who are hoping to achieve clearer prints, richer colours, and greater technical knowledge. Your course fee includes entry to the gardens of Claydon Estate on both days.
Today we will be making samples, using a variety of different fabrics and techniques. We will provide fabric samples, some of which will be mordanted ready for you. You will work with silk, wool and linen.
You will learn what equipment you need to start ecoprinting at home.
You will learn about mordants and mordant some fabric or a scarf, ready for day 2.
You will spend the day putting your new skills to use, printing a silk scarf or a piece of fabric to sew at home.
We will also discuss how to source suitable fabrics including charity shop finds to upcycle.
There will be a materials fee of £10.00, to include fabric samples for day 1 , mordants and sundries. This is payable in cash to the tutor at the start of the course.

Caroline's workshop was very well organised and well structured for a range of ecoprinting experience levels. She is a very clear, but patient, tutor, always mindful of where a student is on their specific learning journey. She builds up the knowledge to be learnt in a straightforward and sequential way and is always positively responsive to questions. Best of all, she is great fun! I would (and do) thoroughly recommend her to new and experienced eco printers alike.
