About the Course
Paula Ortega’s intensive workshop will enable you to create your own masters, moulds and casts for jewellery and small sculpture with reusable and more sustainable alternatives to traditional casting materials.
You will learn the skills to allow you to process these in your own home or studio using some basic tools. Learn how to use and reuse modelling and moulding materials and how to cast your own eco-resin pieces in this comprehensive programme.
You will receive full guidance and support in the friendly and relaxed atmosphere of Second Floor Studios & Arts’ Education Space, by the Thames (London, SE18). Groups are limited to 10 participants.
During the workshop, you will:
learn how to carve a ring or a brooch using wax, based on your own design or taking inspiration from examples provided
make a mould of your piece as well as other pieces (bangles, small sculptures, rings, pendants, etc.) using different moulding materials. Make your own reusable moulding compound!
cast your pieces using safe, lower environmental impact resins
experiment with colouring and adding inclusions to your piece (e.g. thread, glass, dried flowers, wire, small findings, etc.)
sand and polish your work
watch demonstrations of other materials throughout the workshop (including Jesmonite, plaster and alginate for lifecasting).
Take home your master, your moulds and all your casts.
Paula Ortega is part of a materials revolution, where artists and makers are not only making objects, but also creating sustainable materials with which those objects are made. She has been developing her unique casein-based material for the last two years. During the workshop she will also share this journey and demonstrate some fascinating new materials.
