About the Course
DRAWN LETTERING – All Levels - Tom Perkins
Tom Perkins has an international reputation as a lettering designer and craftsman, with work in public and private collections. He has taught widely in the UK and also in Europe, the USA and Japan and influenced many other practitioners.
This workshop will focus on learning/improving drawn Roman capitals and optionally, drawn Roman lower case italic. It is suitable for all levels including beginners. The alphabet will be drawn in detail with tutor-led instruction and used in the drawing of wording to practice letter spacing. If you wish to learn other lettrforms/variations, please contact the Trust well in advance with details of your requirements.
Materials to bring:
A3 pad of lay-out or cartridge paper, Ruler, HB pencil, eraser, compasses, set square (plastic triangle)
LETTERCARVING IN STONE – All levels - Eric Marland
After finishing the Art Restoration course at The City and Guilds of London Art School in 1985, Eric worked as a freelance lettercarver in London until 1990. He then moved to Cambridge, working first for David Kindersley and afterwards at The Carving Workshop. In 1998 Eric set up his own studio in a de-consecrated chapel, where he has an established reputation for fine lettering and creative design.
Students will be given help & advice according to their needs; it is also suitable for previous students. Individual tuition and group demonstrations will be given, ranging from first principals of lettercarving to more advanced techniques for students with prior experience. Students will have the opportunity to try different types of stone and learn carving techniques appropriate to each.
Materials to bring:
A3 pad of lay-out or cartridge paper, Ruler, HB pencil, eraser, compasses, set-square (plastic triangle)
If you have access to, and want to bring the following items - although these tools are available for use:
• Diamond sharpening pad (Eric is able to give advice about what sort if you are intending to buy one)
• A letter cutters dummy
• One or two chisels – 4mm and 6mm (preferably tungsten carbide tipped)
Our Cambridge workshops are held at Eric Marland's lettercutting workshop, a de-consecrated Victorian chapel in the middle of a Cambridge cemetery containing memorials by Keith Bailey, Will Carter, Kevin Cribb, Eric Gill, David Kindersley, Eric Marland, David Parsley, Tom Perkins and many others.

What's included in the price?
All classes will be from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm each day (including 1 hour for lunch break). Tea/coffee and biscuits are provided. Please make your own arrangements for lunch e.g. bring a packed lunch, or sandwiches, etc. can be bought from local shops (the nearest one is about 10-15 minutes’ walk away).
Health & Safety
STEEL TOE-CAP BOOTS/SHOES - VERY IMPORTANT!
Please note we advise when working with stone, both protective foot wear (i.e. boots or shoes with steel toe caps) and eye protection should be worn. Safety glasses will be provided on loan for the workshop.
