About the Course

An introduction to drawing and observational skills. You will be guided through different aspects of drawing including line, tone and texture and use a variety of materials in response to objects, images, landscape and portraiture. Complete beginners welcome.

Examples of historical and contemporary drawing will be discussed in class and learners are encouraged to develop a personal response to subjects including landscape, portraits, objects and photographic images.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Measure the proportions of an object or image
Draw with pencil, charcoal and an eraser
Draw using a full range of tones
Keep a sketchbook, to record your progress
Class format and activities
This is a practical course and you will spend most of your time drawing. Your tutor will set different tasks each week, explaining and demonstrating different subjects and approaches to drawing. Tuition is given to the whole class and on an individual basis, with all learners encouraged to develop a personal way of working. You will also be encouraged to take part in discussions of artists' work and to learn from each other's different ways of drawing.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular and detailed feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
