About the Course
Join Alex Brown, Director of Lemon Studios, for his drawing and painting classes located at Court Robert Arts. His love of colour and observation unify his work, whether it's a landscape or abstract piece. Alex achieved his degree in fine art painting at Camberwell School of Art in the 80s and has been a professional exhibiting artist ever since. He has work in private collections in the uk as well as public collections; the Transport Museum London and Art For Hospitals to name a few!
You have the option to attend all ten classes, or alternatively you can drop-in to one or two - although if you do attend the full ten, you'll have one class free! To start the drawing classes, Alex will focus on composition and proportion, giving students a better understanding in producing accurate drawings. During weeks two and three, the sessions will explore charcoal; showing you the skills to create an expressive and tonal piece. Week four will teach students about automatic drawing, how to be receptive to what you're seeing. Architectural drawing will be about mark-making where you'll build a semi-abstract and spatial picture. Week six and seven each focus on different approaches to drawing a portrait, whilst week eight then delves into blending and overlaying pastels. Still life reflections are the topic of week nine, where you'll use conte crayons to produce a poetic and tonal sketch. Finally, the spring term will come to an end in mark-making a landscape.
As for the painting sessions, again you have the option to attend all ten classes, or alternatively you can drop-in to one or two. The course begins with colour theory, ensuring you develop a better understanding of mixing and the palette in preparation for painting. Week two and three will introduce you to alla prima (wet-on-wet) painting, whilst weeks four and five will focus on acrylic landscapes. As well as exploring semi-abstract watercolour painting in further weeks, Alex will also teach a class inspired by welsh artist, Kyffin Williams. During week nine, Alex will be teaching students tailored techniques that can create a great reflective picture. Then, on week ten, the spring set of classes will end with a session exploring cloud and sky landscapes using the alla prima approach.
