About the Course
On this structured course you will be guided in techniques for experimenting with a range of painting and drawing materials to help identify and express your ideas. Discover how to work expressively with line and composition. Learn how to represent subtle tones and mix vibrant colours.
By the end of the course you will be able to
Work expressively with tone, colour and line
Confidently use a range of painting and drawing media with a variety of tools, surfaces and techniques
Understand composition and how to depict space and scale
Mix colours using a range of different methods
Generate a resource of skills for exploring and developing individual themes and expressing ideas effectively
Class format and activities
You will be introduced to experimental and traditional approaches to painting and drawing and your tutor will demonstrate exercises which help develop observational skills, dexterity and confidence.
A variety of media will be used, including Pencil, Charcoal, Oil Pastels, Inks, Acrylic & Oil Paints and Collage and you will experiment with different methods, surfaces and tools.
Guided projects will give opportunities for working for extended periods on ideas using one or several techniques.
Regular group discussions facilitated by the tutor will encourage you to evaluate your own progress and that of your fellow students, sharing discoveries and learning from one another.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
The course is suitable for beginners as well as more experienced students who wish to try new techniques and develop work in new directions.
What you need to know before you enrol
This course takes place in a studio with access via a lift. Some sessions may be held in public spaces, a museum or a park.
What you will need for your class
Materials will be provided for the first session, when you will be given a suggested materials list. You will be able to purchase materials at cost price from the college art store.
It is advisable to wear old clothes or bring an apron or overalls.
What you can do next
The technical skills and visual awareness developed on this course will be useful for other art courses. You could continue onto a course in Drawing, Painting, Printmaking or Textiles at beginner, intermediate or advanced level at Morley College.
