About the Course

Explore both still-life and the human figure through direct observation. Study form and perspective, and composition and colour, using a range of processes and painting techniques. Suitable for working in oils, acrylics, drawing and mixed media.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Develop observational skills with painting and drawing materials.
Convey the rhythmical essence of the figure within a limited timescale.
Explore the expressive properties of colour using a range of media.
Identify differences of scale of still life objects with charcoal and chalk pastel.
Class format and activities
An exploration of a variety of set figure poses. As well as observational work from stimulating still life subjects will be encouraged. An emphasis is placed on discussing the output collectively. There is one to one tuition and demonstrations will be given.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
The course is suitable for those of experience with painting and drawing and also welcomes enthusiastic beginners.

What you need to know before you enrol
Many of the Art & Design studios have limited accessibility. If you have restricted mobility please contact the Art & Design Administrator or Learning Support before enrolling.

The studio is on the 3rd floor of the main building which has lift access. Some oil painting chemicals may be harmful. The tutor will advise you on the safe handling of these.

What you will need for your class
It would be helpful to bring:
Charcoal, soft pencils, erasers
Sketchbook A5 or A4
Drawing board clips and masking tape
Materials are available to buy at the college, advice on materials will be given in the first session.
