Don is an excellent teacher. He quickly identifies what your needs are and how to resolve problems. He imparted a lot of information almost without me noticing but by the end of the course I felt I had learnt a huge amount and felt a significant improvement in my skills. My aim was to improve particular aspects of my turning and Don surpassed those aims. I would recommend him to anyone from beginner to experienced turner. He is only to happy to share his vast experience.
Don gave me (a beginner) a very good foundation to build upon. Now I feel confident to continue developing my skills on my own.
Besides Don's excellent wood turning skills, he is also a very good teacher who knows how to efficiently transfer his knowledge to his student.
Thank you Don, and your wife, for a very enjoyable day!
For some long time I had wanted to get into woodturning. I have always liked working with wood and have experience in other areas.
I took a 2-day course with Don white, I didn't know exactly what to expect. I presumed that I would be one of a number of students on this course. To my surprise, and delight, I discovered that Don ran this course on a one to one basis. This was excellent.
Don demonstrated each step of the training. I then did my best to follow his instruction. At times when I knew I wasn’t quite correct, Don allowed me to try then would gently place his hand over mine and the work would immediately run as smooth as silk. This impressed me so much. Just a tiny touch transformed my poor progress into a competent finish. Don White is clearly a master woodturner. I would have no hesitation recommending Don White as a tutor for an interested beginner or fledgling woodturner looking for advanced techniques - like myself.
Defiantly worth taking the course if you are interested and want to learn about wood turning. I took the one day course, I had a great time and learnt so much valuable information. Don was great, very helpful and has years of experience, he gave plenty of advice on equipment, safety, materials and answered any questions I had to ask. He even fixed up a set of secondhand chisels I bought and we used them during the day, thanks Don!
Perfect course to give me the knowledge and confidence to get on the lathe. I had a 1 day course and it's definitely well worth the money for the amount of information I got. I would have loved to do another day and will be looking at that in the future. Seeing Dons work and experience is inspiring and he teaches very well.
I have just returned from few days in Cornwall which included a two day turning course with Don. After a twenty odd year break from turning and being self thought, I decided it was time to learn the proper techniques and turned to Don for his expertise (Excuse the pun!) at his workshop in Morwenstow. In the two days I spent with Don he corrected my bad habits and taught me the correct way to present tools to the workpiece, together with sharpening and finishing techniques . I came away with a better understanding of the turning skills and look forward to an improvement in my work. Don makes you feel at ease immediately and imparts
his knowledge of turning with patience and understanding making learning a very enjoyable and rewarding experience. Would thouroughly recommend seeking Don's help for anyone wanting to learn to turn or to improve their skills and I think him for a wonderful two days. A big thank you also to Carol, his wife for keeping me supplied with refreshments and lunches. I look forward to returning agin in the future.
I was made welcome from the start and had a great day and learnt a lot, which will enable me to get into woodturning a lot easier, quicker and safer. Don was very patient and explained everything to enable me to build my confidence and not worry about making mistakes which he soon enabled me to correct. Lunch and refreshments were excellent and the chocolate cake went down extremely well. I would definitely recommend this course as Don is a great teacher of this craft, extremely knowledgeable and you come out of it feeling positive and with a sense of achievement as well as taking some completed items home.
Just had my second wood turning lesson off the great Don White!
He is a wonderful teacher, and his wife is lovely, they make you feel very welcome!
I made a bowl and a platter with the guidance of Don.
I have bought a set of tools and am joining a local wood turning club.
Can't wait to practice what I have learnt!
I absolutely loved my experience and can not recommend enough!
Just wanted to drop a quick thanks and let people know that this course is a must!
Absolutely lovely people and learnt loads and have now got the turning bug!
The only other time I had a smile on my face that big was when I sky dived! I loved it so much I even booked on course again next week
Although I felt quite nervous, Don very quickly put me at ease with his calm, friendly and reassuring manner. His methodical and knowledgeable approach made learning this new skill easy to understand and I very quickly began to get to grips with and enjoy wood turning for the first time. Don took his time to ensure I understood each step and I never felt overwhelmed at any stage. Don's wife provided a delicious lunch which we all shared together with the family. The rest of the day went just as well as the morning where my newly learned skills were put into practice. I am so proud of what I achieved and that is all thanks to Don's exceptional teaching skill and patience, I will remember this day for a long time. I truly recommend anyone to try his course no matter what level of skill you have or level of confidence.
Excellent. Don was a fantastic teacher. I took the two day course and was able to make things on both days. Don taught me about the turning techniques and tools, we also covered the wood ageing process and tips on selecting wood for projects. I would absolutely recommend the course to others interested in woodwork and using their hands!
Just wanted to drop you a quick message to say how I appreciated the time and instruction you gave to me whilst on your recent woodturning course.
I would also like to thank you and Carol for the hospitality extended to me during my stay with you.
Whilst I haven’t done any woodturning as yet, owing to refurbishment of my “workshop”, I certainly hope to do some in the very near future, and will find your advice very useful.
I would highly recommend anyone wishing to take up, or polish their skills in, woodturning to attend one of your courses.
I had my first experience of woodturning with Don recently and I felt it was extremely enjoyable and well taught. A lot was covered in the day, but in a way that I have managed to remember it! Don's enthusiasm, experience and up to date knowledge are obvious. Highly recommended. I hope to return in the future.
My wife purchased a Lathe for me and I had never used one before, after watching YouTube, reading books , I felt I would learn more quickly if I attended some training. I stumbled across Don's website when googling and Boy am I happy I did!
Don is an excellent teacher and an excellent and very experienced wood turner. Don was very patient, explained clearly the correct working practices, and how to work safely.
I had 2 days of 1 to 1 tuition where Don covered Spindle turning, Bowl turning and also covered which tools to use and most importantly hoe to sharpen tools.
I also stayed with Don and Carol, the accommodation was very good and they were both very welcoming, the hospitality was most excellent.
I would highly recommend Don, Don is highly skilled, has vast experience, and has been a teacher at Colleges. ( Ask Don how many bowls he has turned !!!! )
I travelled from Ringwood to visit Don and it was well worth the time and effort, I learnt so much!
Absolutely fantastic teaching. Couldn't be faulted. I was suggested the course by my father who had done it the week previous. A good in depth knowledge of the subject and very welcoming. Would recommend to anyone wanting to pursue this as a hobby or even a career. Thank you.
What a fantastic experience I only wish I had done it years ago. Don was the epitome of teaching. His extensive knowledge combined with his excellent instruction made the day an absolute pleasure - not to mention the delightful homemade lunch provided by his Wife. To have actually made items - one of which was a platter that has been admired by others - in a single day has made me determined to carry on with Woodturning. Overall I can't thank Don enough for his coaching and would not hesitate to recommend his course to anybody. As testimony to this fact one of my Sons has already been on the beginners course on my recommendation.
As a complete novice totally lacking in relevant knowledge or practical experience I feel very blessed to have selected Don as tutor. Others have commented on his incredible skill and patience and I can only endorse what has been said before.
Two days of one to one tuition passed quickly(for me) and gave me the confidence to proceed further.
I appreciated the kindness and friendliness of both Don and his wife who were tolerant of my questioning approach to all things new.
I cannot imagine finding a more practically competent or better informed teacher than Don and have no hesitation in recommending his course.
Having never been in front of a working lathe before, I was excited (and extremely nervous) to have been given a 2 day beginners woodturning course with Don for my birthday.
Don is an extremely knowledgeable, experienced and talented craftsman, had the patience of a saint, and a calmness and teaching style that brought confidence and enabled me to produce items that I am very proud of, which I certainly wasn't expecting!
Don's clear instructions and guidance from safety rules to tool sharpening, to using the lathe, to finishing techniques and tidying up afterwards were an inspiration and he willingly answered questions and freely gave advice on how to go on from here.
In addition delicious lunch, homemade cake and refreshments were provided by Carol. Thanks to you both for a wonderful 2 days.
Don is a true professional and goes out of his way to ensure you achieve your goals. His knowledge and practical ability in woodturning is excellent and he retains the ability to understand and explain solutions to practical everyday problems experienced by those much less experienced in woodturning. Have a realistic idea of what you want to achieve in the day and Don will do everything to see you meet your goals.
Thanks again Don
As a complete novice, I wasn't sure what to expect, but in Don's capable hands, and under his watchful eye, I was soon working at the lathe, and came away with two beautiful and practical items after day one! Day two built on the knowledge, introducing more woodturning techniques, and I have come away with the skills that I need to have a go on my own, knowing that I can always get back in touch should I need any help.
I have wanted to have a go at woodturning for a long time, and I am so glad I did this course.
I spent two very enjoyable and informative days with Don; he is an excellent tutor. Typically Don would explain and demonstrate a particular turning technique, then it was very much "hands on" to learn by making a turned item. Being new to wood turning I found this to be a very effective and fun learning process. Day 1 was spent on spindle turning and I made a dibber and small vase. Day 2 was spent on bowl turning and I made a shallow platter and a deep bowl. The items were met with an impressed "Wow, did you really make that?!" from my wife and son when I got home.
My overall objective was to learn the basics of wood turning and gain the confidence to start wood turning as a hobby. The two day course completely met my objectives and I can strongly recommend Don's course to anyone in a similar situation.
I thoroughly enjoyed my day with Don. He was welcoming, knowledgable and patient! I really felt he was able to quickly determine my needs from the day and direct the teaching and practice appropriately. I have come away re-enthused with wood turning and the shavings are piling up at my feet again. His lovely wife's fantastic cake can’t go without a mention too! Thanks to both of you for a fantastic day!
I live in coastal Western Australia 450 km from Perth, great place to live but not when you are frustrated and looking to improve your wood turning skills.
Fortunately my wife and I were in the process of planning a trip to the UK, the perfect opportunity to look for the right person for assistance. I looked at the options on line and decided to make contact with Don White. I count myself extremely lucky to have had the privilege of spending two days with Don. He is one of UK's master craftsmen, exceptional teacher and very decent individual. Now the next step, to put into practice what I learnt.
I spent two days with Don to re-learn the basics of wood turning that I had forgotten since college twenty years previous. His level of skill and knowledge of his craft and material is that of a master craftsman but one who has a sympathetic understanding of what it is to be a rank beginner. Over the two days Don led me patiently through the essentials of tool preparation and use, workshop and personal safety, selection and seasoning of wood and then the wonders of turning wood. The projects were skill laden and great fun and I finally left with several practice pieces as well as two bowls and a vase that I am inordinately proud of. Did I mention the warm welcome and comfortable accommodation? Don and his wife were kind and generous hosts. This is the perfect course to learn the basics or hone your skills to a greater level than you thought possible - Don is one of Britain's wood turning National Treasures and a gifted teacher.
I have just completed a two day beginners course one on one with Don, and I can highly recommend this for anyone thinking of doing the same. Before doing the course I was slightly apprehensive as I have no experience at all in lathe operation or associated workshop machinery. Don was extremely thorough in explaining workshop safety and 'good practice' when working in that environment. We progressed at a comfortable pace throughout the two days, covering enough techniques to make me want more. The BnB provided by his lovely wife Carol was the icing on the cake and I am definitely considering going back in future.
I thoroughly enjoyed my two days with Don White, and was well looked after by Carol, his wife. Don made his wide knowledge and experience freely available. He was patient and quick to correct when I got things wrong. Throughout there was an emphasis on safe working. Unfortunately I now have severe mobility problems. If it were not for those I would be going back to Don for another two days in which to improve my skills.
We spent two very enjoyable days and one night being looked after by Don and his wife.
Myself and a friend and both wives stayed at Don's property, so while myself and Rodger did our thing, my wife and Maureen spent time with Mrs White as well as visiting some of the local points of interest.
Don is a natural teacher he explains things in terms we can all understand and even when you go wrong he doesn't make you feel bad.
We both learnt a lot and produced some fine items by the end of our stay.
When I said Don is a natural teacher I say this from experience I am a carpenter and joiner and I couldn't teach it.
We would all be very happy to return for the White's hospitality.
Don is a very good teacher and works hard to create a welcome environment. We did a two day course and left with a great deal of hands on experience.
Having attended once we went back, this time armed with some wood we wanted to work with. What's nice is we could experiment with Don helping and guiding us. What we came away with was fantastic and that's mostly down to having a course that works for us, there was no syllabus, it was tailored to our needs by someone with the skills to be adaptable.
Being a novice with zero experience of turning, Don was the perfect tutor. Calm and considered, his extensive experience really helped us make the most of our days with him. With everything laid on and great lunches included, it was a really enjoyable couple of days.
I booked a two day course with Don as a surprise birthday present for my partner and after speaking with Don I booked a place for myself also. We were complete novices but have a love of all crafts and trying something new. We found Don very calm and patient, able cope with our varying skills and his teaching approach was fantastic. Before we started Don showed us all the safety precautions and explained every tool and piece of equipment clearly and fully. After two full days we came away with three creations each using all the techniques we had learnt. We were so inspired that within weeks we had bought all the equipment for ourselves. Unfortunately, due to work and family commitments we haven't made use of this yet but would seriously consider booking another course with Don.
We took advantage of the B&B facilities on site and had the best nights sleep ever. The location was beautiful and Don and Carol's hospitality made it a really fab couple of days. We can recommend this to any like minded people and know that you will NOT be disappointed!
When I first became interested in Wood Turning and started looking for a course to attend, I realized that it is a very male dominated hobby. I wanted to attend a course but was very nervous being both a female and a complete novice.
I booked a 3 day course with Don White and it was the best thing I have ever done. He is an excellent teacher, he is very knowledgeable, good at explaining things, very patient, and he just made the whole 3 day course a really enjoyable experience. So much so that I booked a second course a few months afterwards.
His wife Ann kept the refreshments flowing and provided a lovely lunch.
I would definitely recommend Don to anyone thinking of doing a Wood Turning Course. He provides a 5 star service and is genuinely a really nice man.
I went on Don's course with my partner to get a taste of wood turning and to have a holiday with a difference. We had a fantastic time trying our hand at wood turning. Over the few days we were able to try a variety of techniques as well as completing a bowl and plate which now have pride of place in our home. Don and his wife were very welcoming and provided excellent lunches for us. I would highly recommend this course.
I cannot recommend Don highly enough. I had an excellent day of learning about different wood, how to prepare and make several objects and all taught with great patience and encouragement. Don and his wife were very supportive and good company and I wouldn't hesitate to go back for another lesson.
Had a great day. Having never done woodturning before a family member bought me the course as a gift. it was a really good experience something I'd definitely like to do again. Don is a great teacher and I highly recommend that anyone interested in woodturning should contact Don. Great day. Thanks.
I did a two day course with Don a few years ago as a birthday present from my wife and friends and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I had some self-taught experience already but wasn't progressing much and had let it slip for quite a while. Don's calm unhurried teaching was just what I needed. Particularly useful was being shown how to sharpen the different turning tools correctly. The depth of his experience is obvious and the examples of his work are inspiring. Unfortunately, due to other demands on my time, I haven't made as much use of what I learned as I would like and I'm seriously considering another refresher with Don. I learnt so much the last time.
The location, the local pub and Don and Carol's hospitality also help to make it a really good couple of days. Well worth it!
An excellant two day novices introduction to woodturning with Don two years past. I was hooked utterly on the first day and as a result have spent many thousands of pounds building and equipping a workshop to further my turning skills. However my wife is planning to sue Don White, and I am being sent to Rehab for a cure for Turning Madness! Nice guy, Great teacher.
First, I want to thank you, Don, for providing me the valuable 2-day woodturning course, and it has been a precious and warm experience to stay with you and Carol. I really wish I could have more time and take a longer course with you:))
I am a foreign student studying design in London and was searching for wood turning courses for my research of my personal project. I saw Don's coloured bowl work on the website and then decided to take a 2-day course with him. For I have little experience travelling along, Don kindly helped me plan the trip to Bude, and pick me up from Bude to Morwenstow. We talked a lot about the potential of woodturning methods applying on different types of materials. Don was very generous with his knowledge, patiently answered every question I had. I had no woodturning experience before but I made a very ambitious request asking Don if I could make a decorated vase(a design I saw on a woodturning book) during the course. Don not only carefully prepared and planned the course for me, guided me through the making process, but also let me play with the design freely and create my own decorating pattern on the vase. Besides the vase, the course also covered very detailed information about the woodturning basics, how to turn spindle piece and bowl/plate piece, which I found challenging and useful at the same time. I will definitely do a lot of practice after the course and try to master the skills I’ve learned.
The B&B accommodation was wonderful too. Great food and absolutely beautiful scenery. I highly recommend this course to anyone interested in woodturning and crafts making.
Can highly recommend the two day course as it gave me time to relax over the lathe and even produce some bits and bobs to impress the wife.
Even as a trained Carpenter my lathe skills were amateurish but Don had so much patience with me that I learned a lot in a very short time. Thanks Don, an excellent insight into the craft. Lunch was great too!
Excellent course with Don, very skilled craftsman and he was exceptional at imparting his knowledge - even when I was frustrating he calmly and quietly helped build confidence.
Super pleased with what I achieved, took away several items I made to show the family, and what I've learnt has been put to good use since. He also looked over my gouges and taught me how to sharpen them properly which has made a considerable difference.
Very much enjoyed the course, Carol's excellent sponge cake, looking forward to a return visit very soon!
I found Dons 2day course to be excellent value , I learnt all the basics and Don installed enough confidence in me to go and have go. He is also an excellent source of information for when you invest in tools and equipment . I really like Don and find him easy to get on with, his knowledge is 2nd to none. Clive Munn
I have done two 2 day courses with Don over the years, one as a beginner and one with a little bit more experience. I found Don to be attentive, patient and very careful as to the way in which he teaches, making sure that you are following, and going over ground again that I found difficult at first.
Don has a nice sense of humour, and through my initial nerves, he made me feel relaxed and welcome. His workshop is spacious and well equipped and I one day dream of having a set up like that.
I would very much recommend a course with him, to kick start your Woodturning, but also to improve your skills later on.
Don is an excellent teacher and coach and demonstrates the technique in a calm and reassuring manner. His skills were obvious from the start and his workshop is well laid out and comprehensively stocked.
I spent two very rewarding days with him and would have no hesitation in recommending his courses to anyone else.
An excellent day spent with Don. This was my first attempt at wood turning but with Don's careful guidance and teaching, I came away with a great understanding of the craft. A great mixture of both hands on and hands off teaching. I would recommend him to anyone, no matter what level or experience you are at.
Thoroughly enjoyable, highly educational, strong focus on hands-on learning and great overview of practical safety in the workshop. Recommend the two day course I undertook to all! Wood is wonderful and what Don does with it only enhances it.
The two-day course was very useful. I have been turning for many years without any formal tuition and Don was patient in helping me unlearn some bad habits and teaching me how to use a gouge properly. What Don can do with a gouge in one hand, most of us need 3 hands!
I and a friend attended a two day turning course with Don White. The friend was still quite a beginner, whereas I had a bit more experience. Despite the skills gap, Don was able to inspire us both into trying new things while ensuring that our basic skills were well honed. We had two very enjoyable and stimulating days. Don is also situated in a beautiful part of the country offering some lovely walks with which to unwind in the evening after the days turning.
I had a brilliant two day course with Don a few years ago, the aim being to enhance and correct my largely self- and video- taught wood turning skills. Don is an excellent teacher, patient, inspiring, engaging and hugely knowledgeable, building confidence as well as competence. My bowls and occasional spindle work following the course are streets ahead of those created before, thanks to Don!
His workshop is a thing of beauty and he and his wife provide excellent B&B too. Highly recommended.
I was given a 2day course for my 60th birthday as being a very novice turner decided I could benefit somewhat. I must say I was feeling a little apprehensive but on arrival found Don very welcoming and he soon put me at my ease. Over the 2 days we covered tool sharpening, followed by spindle turning where I made a seed dibber and vase and on the second day a plate and bowl. I found Don a very calm and proficient teacher and was very pleased with the results thanks to Don's guidance and occasional light touch on the tools. I have done some work at home since but not as much as I would like to have done so I am considering returning to Don to do a one day refresher.
I attended a two day course with Don in the summer of 2014. I had very little previous experience of woodturning. It was essential to me that I understood the basic principles and applied them from the start. Don explained these principles and guided my attempts with minimal interference. I came home with examples of my work of which I am still proud today. Don is an excellent teacher and host and I enjoyed the time with him and Carol immensely.
I attended a two day course and I found Don to be very professional and friendly . He explained all aspects of wood turning ,materials and tools required .I came away with all the knowledge I needed to pursue my hobby .
A very professional course with a well equipped workshop. I learned such a lot in a very short time from a very patient and encouraging tutor. Also the hospitality my wife and I received was brilliant.
I would thoroughly recommend these courses to anyone. I came away filled with enthusiasm and the ability to tackle the majority of woodturning tasks.
I had the pleasure of attending a 2 day course with Don, I had no previous experience of woodturning, but Don took the time to explain all aspects of the hobby. It is now over a year since I did the course and have the conffidence to try almost anything on the lathe. I would recommend anyone looking for a great teacher to book with Don. I also stayed at his B&B and was treated to an excellent breakfast to keep me going till lunch.
We have very much enjoyed two 2-day courses over the past few years with Don as part of a family holiday in Cornwall where boys and girls did different activities. Stereo-typed I know, but the boys wouldn't have enjoyed the spa! Don is a fantastic teacher and the peaceful tranquility of his workshop, the depth of his knowledge, skills and talents and the feel and smell of a well-controlled cut left us feeling inspired and restored on each occasion.
I originally went on," Don's 2 day Wood Turning Course," because I needed the health and safety training to enable me to give training to students. The principles that Don instilled in me have always stayed with me and I find myself using the same teaching methods he used with me with the students. These have proved very successful. He was good company for 2 days. He made me feel at ease, was always patient and made sure I progressed to a level of competence that enabled me to further develop my skills with confidence. I have acquired a preoccupation with wood turning and will continue to be involved with wood turning as long as I am able to.
I had a two day turning course with Don recently, and found the whole experience to be a tremendous starting point for my new found love of wood turning. Don is very careful to make sure that all aspects of the course are covered in a professional and personal manner which leaves you with the confidence to progress at home /local club .His advice was also invaluable to the purchase of the required tools and lathe at the early stages. I would thoroughly recommend Dons course to anyone considering wood turning .
Having a desire to "improve" I went on a two-day course with Don White and as a result of his excellent teaching and encouragement I have been able to earn a worthwhile supplement to my pension. In my opinion Don is one of the best Wood Turners in this Country, and surely one of the most experienced Tutors of his craft. Why look further? Alf Sims
I would recommend anyone, from novices to more experienced wood turners, taking a training course with Don.
Over the last couple of years I've been back to Don several times, everytime I've learnt more and more and each time my skill levels and confidence take a leap-forward. Whether it's correcting bad habits or teaching new techniques, Don's knowledge, patience and experience means that whatever you're trying to learn, you'll leave having mastered it!
And let's not forget Don's 'partner in crime'! The day would not be complete without the superb refreshments and lunches supplied by his lovely wife Carol.
My 2 day course with Don was informative and helpful in improving my skills at woodturning. Don's vast knowledge of the subject and practical experience, together with his patience, made the whole experience very rewarding. The 2 days were a very pleasant experience and his kind and courteous manner, coupled with a nice lunch, was a perfect introduction to this worthwhile pastime and I would have no hesitation in recommending him as a very able and amiable tutor.
We attended a 2 day course together with Don over consecutive weekends. We thoroughly enjoyed it and as complete beginners learnt a lot. It was useful being able to share the days as we were able to support each other when we tried out what we had learnt on our own lathe. The days were very relaxed and Don answered all our questions in a way that we could understand. We would definitely recommend him as a tutor for anyone interested in discovering the joys of woodturning.
Don is an amazing instructor. The combination of calmness, patience and understated, exceptional skills make for a very rewarding experience.
He shares his knowledge, quietly and openly, wanting you to benefit from and share his love of wood turning.
I had started at home trying to turn some table legs, teaching myself. The result was carnage, failure and a complete lack of confidence. By the end of the morning with Don my confidence was restored. We had produced some simple and beautiful things which I proudly took home. A wonderful expereince.
In a relatively short space of time he gives you enough skills and information to sharpen your tools, turn spindles and bowls. You will leave enthused and equipped to start wood turning.
I attended a one day course with Don in 2014. I found the whole day delightful and informative. It was structured in two halves. In the morning we went through all aspects of turning between centres by lunch time I had completed two super jobs!
In the afternoon (after a great lunch) I was shown the secrets of bowl making. Of particular interest to me was the use and sharpening of the gouges. At the end of the course I went home with three projects fired up with enthusiasm. A great day!
I did a two day course with Don. My wife and two children also stayed at his home from home b and b and had a fantastic time in this lovely location. Don is a master at his craft and I learnt skills from him that are not easily picked up from watching videos or reading books. I came away with a feel for wood turning which can only be learnt from spending time with a skilled craftsman. Don is an extremely patient teacher and very understanding about the needs of each individual. I would not hesitate in recommending a course with him.
I did a 2 day course with Don which was excellent. Don is a fantastically knowledgable and talented craftsman and a good and patient teacher. Everything was brilliantly set up, with great equipment and materials. I'd definitely recommend.
As a beginner at wood turning I attended one of Don's 2 day courses a year or so ago. In an unhurried way he introduced me to all of the basic skills necessary to be successful, and we completed several finished pieces during the teaching. I was encouraged to join our local club and have made steady progress. I am now thinking of another course as Don tailors the teaching to your individual needs.
I attended the 2 day woodturning with Don last year. The 2 days were very intensive. Don is a very informative and generous teacher. I felt extremely confident that I could go away and start turning on my own after the course. He is very patient and will explain things simply and as may times as you need. I have done many practical courses in the past - but with his knowledge and method of teaching I would say that this is the best one I have done by far.
My husband and I bought ourselves a 2 day course and B&B with Don (and his wife) as a Christmas present to each other and have to say it was a great gift. Don is an excellent teacher, calm and approachable and more than willing to share his knowledge and skills. We had a lathe each with Don sharing his time between us focussing on our individual needs and with expert guidance we created some lovely pieces. Don's advice on the correct tools for the job and how to sharpen and maintain them was invaluable. The well paced course and very comfortable B&B meant that it was a happy, relaxing 2 days and we came away feeling able to continue to build on our newly acquired skills at home.
We would happily recommend Don's courses
Don is at the top of his game both as a teacher and a creative woodturner. From a complete beginner he had me up and turning very quickly and safely. You can't beat the hands on learning experience Don provides from his well equiped workshop. Highly recommended. Looking forward to returning for a refresher course. Many thanks Don!
As a late comer to wood turning I was making slow progress in learning the craft from reading and instructional DVDs. I spent a day with Don, which rapidly put me on the right track and in one day I had overcome most of the faults acquired by self teaching. It gave me a clear idea of the aspects which were really important and we covered both spindle turning and bowl making technique. I am looking forward to another session with Don shortly.
After a summer of little turning success, I decided to enrol myself on the 2 day course. Don is an amazing teacher with a wealth of knowledge, which he will impart with as much or little as you wish to take form the course. Over the 2 days I learnt about woods to turn, how to use and care for each tool in turn, and the different techniques, from roughing to finishing, used in spindle/bowl turning. This is a course I would recommend to any lever turner!
As a unexpected Surprise 50th Birthday present my wife and daughters had booked for me to attend a two day introduction wood turning course with Don. This was a complete shock to me but within an hour of Dons company his passion and knowledge became clear to me and I soon realised I was going to thoroughly enjoy the next two days.
The course gave me a good introduction into to turning, chisel sharpening, sanding and the finishing of products.
Shortly after completing the course I was inspired to purchase a lathe, chisels etc and I am thoroughly enjoying my new found hobbie.
I would thoroughly recommend any of Dons courses as he is a master of his trade and a gentleman.
I was lucky enough to spend two days with Don. During the two days he gave excellent instruction in the basics of Woodturning. Everything was covered starting with safety, through spindle turning and bowl turning. He is extremely patient and takes time to ensure you understand the various tools and techniques . I would recommend spending time on a course with Don, it's very good value, you really do get to know the basics and more.
My course with Don was a real pleasure. His advice on tools, lathes, and safety equipment has proved invaluable in helping me set up my workshop. Don's patient manner, encouragement, and tuition in his well equipped workshop, has given me woodturning skills that I could never have achieved by myself. I would recommend anyone with an interest in woodturning, whether as a beginner or amateur turner to get a course with Don, and improve your woodturning skills.
I was a self taught woodturner but felt I needed to refine my skills.
Two day with Don made such a difference to my ability to cut cleanly and smoothly Don was
very good at correcting my bad habits, with his help and patience I now turn with confidence to such an extent I make a living at it.
Don is a good teacher and very easy to understand, I only wish I had his ability and patience.
I spent two days learning the basics of wood turning. The training was pitched a the correct level cheerful and helpful with positive reinforcement and never missed an opportunity to teach a little extra from history of the lathes to design of the tools. I find many of those elements coming back to me and an understanding of the bewildering array of tool and machinery you can buy. I found the course great covering all the basics the tool use positioning an importantly the understanding of what to buy in as my lathe setup tools and dust extraction. The skills were and invaluable safe start and I was so inspired I purchased one of his lathes some months later and still love it. Every time I thought of writing this review I found my self back in the garage on the lathe inspired again. Many thanks Don
I have worked as a joiner for over 35 years and in that time I have been on several different courses covering many kinds of subjects within the trade.
I found Don White when I moved to Cornwall and booked a two day course to really up date my self and to reaffirm my knowledge and skill base on the lathe.
Don's approach and workshop are second to none. His knowledge, skill and teaching technique are all beyond approach. He very soon identified my short falls and put me on the right road to acheive far better results and finish with out making me feel inadequate.
I had the best ever experience possible in the time.
Don's very friendly wife Carol supplied us with plenty of refreshments through out the days and her lunches are exquisite.
I can not recommend Don White wood turning courses highly enough just book and enjoy the experience.
It is now some years since I spent time with Don. His knowledge, patience and skills in woodturning were, I found, an absolutely invaluable entrée into the world of wood turning. In the few days I spent with him he taught me what tools to use, how to hold them, how to have my body in the correct place with regard to the lathe.
I really do think that any person wanting to learn could do no better that to go to a 'Don ' course. It will stand you well for ever.
My wife gave me a 2day course with Don . We had asplendid 2days the local pub was great, but Don's course was just what I wanted as a complete beginner. I have not looked back, no more Christmas present problems! Don also very kindly advised me about lathes I found on EBay after I got home. If you are interested in wood turning ,Don's a wonderful patient teacher and has great knowledge and ability. I think I need to have another couple of day in Cornwall to get me to the next level. My wife and dog enjoyed it soon lovely walks.
I attended a two day wood turning course with Don a few years ago and was delighted with it. I was a total beginner and not the fastest of learners but Don proved to be the most patient of teachers; he quickly assessed my ability and set the course accordingly, to include both spindle and bowl turning. The importance of tool sharpening was stressed and demonstrated-I was even able to buy some good quality refurbished tools from Don which are of good quality and were very reasonably priced.
I have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending Don's course, not to mention his wife Carol's excellent lunch!
I fell in love with wood turning when I was very young, unfortunately I have been unable to do any due to an absence of a lathe for a decade or so. When I finally had access to a Woodturning lathe I found that I had lost confidence after such a long gap without turning. I booked onto Don's course and with his vast knowledge, years of experience and brilliant tuition I quickly built up my confidence and got taught how to turn properly. As a result of the course I was hooked again and managed to turn some professional looking Christmas presents for all my friends. I would strongly recommend Don's course what ever your level because his gentle, patient and encouraging manner will support you to fulfil all your wood turning dreams. I will be booking myself on another course this year. He is also willing to talk through problems when you return home over the phone. He has a passion for sharing his knowledge so go ahead and book.
One of my better investments - a two day beginners course in Don White's workshop. I had the most enjoyable time there learning from the Master himself.
Mr Don White is a gifted teacher, turner & gentleman. There is a great depth to the man, he is generous to a fault. Don is a shinning example of excellence in his field. I found him to be honest, tolerant & understanding.
The first class B&B provided by Don's wife is deserving of a whole other chapter!
I can absolutely confirm the reviews of others who have taken courses with Don. The great depth of his knowledge and experience in both turning and teaching were immediately clear to me, while his calm manner instilled confidence, but also respect for the wood and machinery. I feel lucky and priviledged to have taken two courses with Don - first as a total beginner, then again after a few years home practice. I enjoyed both courses enormously, and both have served as milestones in my wood-turning learning curve. I can highly recommend Dons courses - you will learn a lot.
I had a 2 day course with Don about 3 years ago as an Xmas present from my daughter. I was an amature turner doing everything wrong but after Dons course I was far better informed. I turned a bowl and plater from memory. He is a very nice bloke and an excellent teacher very calm and informative. I left the course very enthused and he put me in touch with the Max Carey woodturning trust in Bristol. I have now completed my artisan course at the mill all thanks to Don. I would thoroughly recommend any of Don's courses they are brilliant and in a fabulous location!
I attended a two day course a couple of years ago and Don was very patient and an excellent instructor. My bowl turning is improving but I could probably do with a refresher course at some juncture!.My wife enjoyed walking the coastal trail and we both thoroughly appreciated Don and his wifes' warm B & B hospitality. Thanks Don for a great experience.Thoroughly recommended and it's a shame the two day course is going
I attended the two day course a couple of years ago. It was a Christmas present from my daughter as she knew that I was thinking of taking up wood turning. My work back ground was that of a skilled mechanical engineer working on Horizontal borers, I also instructed apprentices on these machines.
My wife came down to Cornwall with me as we stayed Bed and Breakfast at Don White's lovely bungalow. We were made to feel right at home. Mrs White's breakfast was delicious.
I had not done any wood turning before this course, but I was made to feel very comfortable by the way Don proceeded with the course. His expertise just shone through and I picked it up very quickly. I finished the course early and was then shown what could be done. Wow, Don is a Master at Wood Turning. It was a pleasure to be taught by him. I purchased a lathe as soon as I got home and have been slowly learning to turn some very good bowls for the family. When I retire this course will stand me in good stead for all the turning I hopefully will be doing. I recommend this course to any beginner or novice, Don was just the best.
I came back to wood turning on Don's two-day course, a 70th birthday present from the family, after a gap of, what? 55-odd years since making things on the old belt-driven lathe at school. In his hands it all came back to me, as it never could have done if I'd gone it alone. His wisdom, experience and phlegmatic style are perfect for imparting a lot of know-how in a relatively short time. The things I turned at Morwenstow are in daily view/use, and I have added all sorts since, plus the gratification of being able to sell my better stuff on the Folksy website ( Camdenshed, please Google it) to raise funds to help keep our Camden Men's Shed going. Thanks again, Don!
I spent 2 days one-to-one with Don and what a wonderful experience that was. Don is a master of his trade and an inspiring and thoughtful teacher. His attention to detail and his wealth of knowledge make this a course not to be missed.
I would recommend Don to anyone regardless of prior knowledge or standard - you will learn from the master.
I came on a two day course in woodturning as a complete beginner. I still treasure two of the bowls I made in that time! Don is a great teacher, an enthusiast for his craft, who was easily able to meet my idiotic requirements. He had a superb workshop which was extremely well equipped and if you stay over, there's a great pub in easy walking distance!
Don makes it a joy to learn ! He has a pleasant, non confrontational manner about him which makes it easy to learn. In his hands you can't fail to enjoy and achieve. I have no hesitation in recommending hiom most warmly to anyone who wants to learn the skills of woodturning.
My husband and I stayed b & b with Don while doing a 2 day course. He is a calm and patient teacher happy to explain and re-explain. He demonstrates and then lets you go, yet always there assist.
His own skills are in no doubt as you see the selection of his work. We felt we learned the basics and about the safety it gave us confidence to then build on these skills, I am sure what ever standard we had been he could have taught us more. A great two days thank you Don.
I was lucky enough to attend a two day beginners Woodturning course with Don.
Don is a fantastic teacher with an extraordinary Woodturning talent. His experience as both a teacher and craftsman makes the experience incredibly engaging and ultimately rewarding.
I would recommend Don's courses to anyone and everyone,
Don is a great teacher/coach and the two days I spent with him have informed all that I have tried to do subsequently. The clarity of his advice and encouraging style makes learning a pleasure . The fact that he and his charming wife are also friendly made my stay and the course a real delight
Don is an excellent teacher, his quiet calm approach with vast knowledge makes it pleasure to work under his tuition.
His years of experience and the quality of the work he turns inspires confidence with the ability to visualise one own creativity.
