About the Course
Bex Gouverneur returns to the studio in 2020 to teach this ever popular 2 day course.
Our beloved pets are a source of inspiration to us all and during this two day course, Bex will guide you through the process of capturing their personality and character in a detailed charcoal study, whilst teaching you a variety of unusual charcoal techniques.
The course will be broken into 2 parts over the 2 days, leading to the completion of a detailed charcoal study of your chosen domestic animal (both dogs and cats will be discussed during the sessions).
On the first day you will learn about a range of different techniques that can be used to create various desired effects. There will be several short demonstrations and participants will explore mark making and manipulation of materials, including rendering of fur, skin textures, ears and the illusive glint in the eyes! You will also be shown a range of drafting techniques which cover all ability levels, from which you can select your preferred method before beginning the drafting stage.
Day 2 will focus on the creation of your own drawing, putting into practice and refining the techniques learnt on day 1. This day will consist primarily of guided individual work. There will be a large range of photographic images available for you to work from, but students are also encouraged to bring along photographs of their own pets. If you wish to bring your own images, please contact the artist prior to the course in order to check the suitability of the images.
The course will include:
· Guidance on photographing your subject (no cameras needed – theory only)
· Drafting techniques
· Application and manipulation of charcoal powder
· Creating strong, crisp highlights
· Achieving a full range of tones in charcoal
· Rendering of a variety of fur types including dark, light, flat and wavy
What to bring:
We will be working with charcoal powder, brushes, pierre noire pencils, tortillions and willow charcoal of various thicknesses. If you have your own equipment which you wish to bring along, please do so. A comprehensive list will be provided in advance of the course.
A full materials pack will be available to buy on the day - details and prices tbc, subject to changes to taxes after Brexit.
Due to the nature of the techniques used and level of detail achieved in this work, it can take between 10 and 20 hours to fully complete a drawing. During the course, students can expect to have partially completed one drawing and to have gained the knowledge and understanding to continue working at home.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
Tea, Coffee, biscuits and cold refreshments will be available throughout the day. Lunch is not provided although The Phoenix Kitchen, just next door, provides an array of meals, light lunches and snacks. Alternatively, there is a fridge and microwave in the studio kitchen for you to use if you would prefer to bring your own lunch.
I thought the standard of teaching was very high. At no point did I feel ignorant and I learnt a huge amount. I felt very encouraged as well as inspired.
