About the Course

This course is designed for those who have an interest in exploring traditional and contemporary approaches and techniques within Documentary photography, including Street reportage, Social documentary and Photojournalism. Gain compositional skills and develop a critical eye to shoot images that communicate a story effectively. Challenges will be set to improve students’ street documentary camera skills, and move their photographic ‘seeing’ to the next level. Develop ideas for shooting images to document your own life and surroundings. For students who have an interest in documenting aspect of the world they live in. You will be introduced to the practical skills to capturing details, and how to create a narrative or dramatic sequences for your own Photographic Journal / personal documentary project. If you are not entitled to a reduced fee but are finding it difficult to pay for your course in one go, we can offer a Staged Payment Agreement to split the costs into three payments if your course(s) costs £200 or more. Please talk to a member of enrolment staff about how your payments would be structured. You are liable for all payments under this agreement, even if you stop attending your class.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Improve your street photography skills and techniques, in response to different locations visited.
Gain composition skills to produce interesting compelling images.
Analyse a photograph within a critical framework
Identify the key elements of photojournalism
Tell a story with a series of photographic images, demonstrating both good photographic and editing skills
Class format and activities
Teaching is both in groups and on an individual, one-to-one basis, with technical advice and support depending on your needs. The tutor will give presentations and lead group discussions tailored around developing creative ideas along side technical know how. The course will include some practical hands-on class tasks, plus, students working on their own individual personal projects. Ideally students will take photographs as weekly assignments between sessions, reflecting what we had spoke about in class and bring them in the following week for group critique and assistance with editing, and use of Adobe Lightroom.

Entry requirements
Ideally, you have already gained a basic understanding of the use of exposure, apertures and shutter speeds, depth of field, lenses, and composition, but an interest in photography is a good starting point. You should also be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, handouts and for health and safety information, and any group discussions. Please note all students will need to bring their own digital SLR camera.

What you need to know before you enrol
During the lessons we will be going out to take photographs around the college and some lessons may be
outside on location. Homework projects will be set and these are an integral part of making progress on the course.
