This course is a practical introduction to digital pattern cutting and will provide you with the technical skills to develop and produce commercial garments through Computer Aided Design (CAD).
On this course you’ll learn the skills of digitising, creating patterns and blocks, grading and making pattern amendments, allowing you to take your fashion designs to a commercial pre-production level.
Whether you’re at the beginning of your pattern cutting career or you’re already in the industry looking to enhance your skills further, the course will demonstrate how CAD can bring your designs to industry standard.
You’ll learn how to digitise your designs using Lectra CAD software, exploring pattern creation and modification, fit amendments, dart manipulation, adding fullness, creating seam allowances, adding notches and drill holes.
You’ll be introduced to these skills and techniques through demonstrations, project work, one-to-one feedback and group critiques.
During the course you will:
- create blocks and patterns from scratch
- learn how to digitise your patterns using CAD
- understand modification techniques
- assemble your pattern pieces
- explore measuring and size charts in CAD software
- learn how to grade patterns using CAD software
- understand how CAD pattern systems are used in the fashion industry today.
What will I gain?
By the end of the course, you’ll have enhanced your knowledge of Lectra CAD software for digital pattern cutting and understand how it can be used to produce patterns for commercial use.
You’ll have the confidence to move your manual cutting skills to a digital platform, leaving with pattern samples and technical notes to enhance your portfolio.
In addition to the sessions on campus, there'll also be an online after-care session with your tutor and the group to discuss any technical questions you have.
Entry requirement: You should have a practical understanding of traditional pattern cutting.
Whilst no software experience is required, you should be confident in saving files and basic computer functions.
Where you’ll learn: You will be based in the Bonington building at the City Campus, our dedicated art and design hub.
You will be taught in a CAD suite, equipped with Lectra software to design your patterns.
You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.
You can book a self-catered, single room with private bathroom on our city campus, right next door to our studios and classrooms.
