About the Course

Based on the architecture and scenery of Flatford Mill, this course takes you through the process of collecting visual information: researching, drawing and experimenting. As a residential course, it offers a fabulous opportunity for complete creative immersion and you will be encouraged draw everything you see from morning until night. Connected, interesting projects to inspire and develop your sketchbook activities. Suitable for both beginners and more experienced students.

This course takes a fresh, lively, productive approach to drawing and working in your sketchbook, and the work you create will be imaginative, modern, and idiosyncratic. There is a broad theme to each day. We will explore our surroundings sketching people, architectural detail and gathering visual material.

By the end of the course you will be able to identify what is worthy of your attention, choose a theme, and be able to move on with that theme (using the sequence of strategies that we have explored) into daily drawing ideas for the future.

Course tutor: Debora Cane
Debora is an enthusiastic art tutor with over 30 years’ experience. All of her courses concentrate on simple concepts and practical techniques and are suitable for everyone.

What to Bring
Sketchbook: we will be undertaking short exercises and drawing in the field so it is recommended that you bring a sketchbook that is smaller than A4 so that it is easy to carry around. It needs to be hard backed, bound, plain, reasonable quality cartridge paper. Bring the size and shape you feel comfortable with.
Digital camera or smartphone to take photographs and view pictures when back at the studio.
A POSCA white brush pen to correct mistakes (optional).
Your favourite drawing equipment including a couple of 2B pencils and rubber. Feel free to bring whatever else you usually use to draw with such as coloured pencils, inks, felt pens etc. (note your tutor will also bring plenty of varied and useful stuff for you to try, so coloured pencils and inks are not essential).
A set of watercolours (a minimal, easily transportable set is ideal – you won’t need a huge array of colours for this course) and a small selection of nice brushes. I find the Pentel water filled paintbrushes inexpensive and really useful, but they are not essential for this course so bring what you already have to hand.
