Delicate Textured Porcelain Vessels

Delicate Textured Porcelain Vessels

Description

Porcelain is beguiling- it’s translucency and strength have appealed in equal measure to ceramic collectors over the centuries. It was first made during the Chinese Tang dynasty and developed and improved through the following centuries. It is used in both liquid and solid form and it’s the solid variety we will be using in this workshop. It is not an easy substance to work with so we will be using a version of porcelain with paper fibres added to it to improve the work-ability, and the pieces we will be making will be small.

Debbie will give some historical background to porcelain, with contemporary examples. She will demonstrate slab rolling and joining techniques and how to draw and use templates. She will also show you how to use texture and oxides to decorate and colour your work. Debbie will provide guidance and support throughout the day on an individual basis. During the afternoon, you will be able to choose which colour glaze you would like for your work.

The pots will be left with the tutor for firing and glazing and will be available for collection from Micklem’s Farm approx 4-5 weeks following the course. The cost of the clay, glazes and firings is not included in the course fee; the approximate cost for these will be £40-45, payable to the tutor during the workshop.

What to bring:

An apron

pencil & paper

Debbie suggests you have short nails as longer nails can make working with clay just that little bit harder. Please treat your hands to a good quality hand cream, as clay is very drying on the hands.

Refunds are not available on this booking. Start dates may be amended on request.
