About the Course

An exciting mosaic workshop decorating natural pebbles or other natural stones. A good selection of recycled tessersae will be used to create unique pieces of artwork to take home with you. The workshop will take place in historic Higherford Mill, an old water powered mill now home to a collection of creatives.

Natural pebbles and stones including river stones are full of magical energy, they have been moulded into the shapes they are through probably thousands of years of movement around them. Either in the ocean or in the earth. They are special.

When you have been away on holiday you may have picked up a stone that seemed special to you, or as a reminder of your trip. You can bring these stones along with you to decorate or you may have an unusual shaped stone or one you have found in your garden.

Primarily we will be creating art to use inside the home as there is more choice of materials available for this. Although we will discuss how to create outdoor pieces as well.

You will learn about general mosaic techniques, materials, tesserae, materials and tools needed. The classes are small and there is plenty of one to one tuition on how to cut and shape tiles, choosing design, colours etc. Although I like to allow space for you to develop your own creativity, I am also fully supportive throughout the process.

You will be given grout and instructions to take home with you to finish in your own time. There will probably be time for you to decorate more than one pebble, depending on their size. These would make ideal gifts for someone special. I usually use fist sized pebbles, but you could go slightly larger to use as say a door stop. But I would not go much bigger than that as they have to be carried flat back home again.

If they are fairly round or uneven, I would ask that you bring some thing like a basket or firm box and an old cloth to put in the bottom to stop them moving around on the way home.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

All materials are included except the stones. Due to the weight and difficulty of collecting them I ask you to bring your own. Please bring a selection of these as you will probably have time to decorate a few of these.

Recycled tesserae available includes, china, buttons, beads, shells, glass etc. If you have some bits and pieces you would like to bring along to add to your mosaic then please do. Please check out the link to the facebook page to find other workshop dates.

We aim to have a fun creative day, refreshments of tea, coffee and biscuits will be served throughout. We will have a short break for you to bring and eat your packed lunch.

Please bring an Apron with you and notebook.
