Decorate a Wooden Spoon using the Historic Technique of Kolrossing

Unlimited options of design

Spend the day learning the Scandinavian art of Kolrossing (aka Kohlrosing) which dates back to the Vikings. This involves incising thin decorative lines and patterns into wood and filling them with dark powders (charcoal, coffee grounds, ground bark), very similar in technique to scrimshaw work on bone and ivory. This is then finished with a polish to bring out the contrasting colours.

You will be taught by the award-winning carver, Justin Sandford. He will provide you with a wooden spoon that he has already carved, so that you can focus on the details. He will also have all the tools you need to complete your piece.

To make this experience as authentic as possible, you will be working in our covered outdoor classroom surrounding an open fire.

This will truly be a day to remember.

Tutor - Justin Sandford

Justin was born into a happy, but poor, family of makers in rural South Wiltshire. He soon learned to live off the land, and in doing so, realised that a penny or two could be both saved and earned from foraging, fishing and hunting. Before long Justin was carving spoons and selling them to fund his hobbies - while always giving a few bob to his mum.

Fast forward a few decades and Justin is now an award-winning spoon carver who can often be seen at country shows all over the south west, demonstrating the art of spoon carving and other green wood crafts.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
