About the Course
Generate inventive sketchbooks. Through practical drawing exercises and guided projects, learn how to source themes, develop variations and present ideas. Use sketchbooks as preparation for future work or as finished pieces in themselves.
By the end of the course you will be able to
Understand different ways of sourcing and recording information through drawing
Expand, develop and refine possibilities by experimenting with a range of materials
Visually present the development of your ideas through sketchbooks or worksheets
Class format and activities
Through guided exercises and projects you will:
Develop themes from varied influences and sources. For example, from natural or man-made forms, architecture, texts, or a range of imagery and photographs.
Gather and record information through drawing, in both wet and dry materials, using slow and fast techniques. Discover possible resources and inspiration through occasional visits to public spaces.
Develop your ideas through experimentation with different materials.
Explore formats for presenting working processes in sketchbooks or with worksheets.
Regular group discussions facilitated by the tutor will encourage you to evaluate your own progress and that of your fellow students, sharing discoveries and learning from one another.
In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
The course is suitable for beginners as well as more experienced students who wish to develop work in new directions.
What you need to know before you enrol
This course takes place in a studio with access via a lift. Some sessions may be held in public spaces, a museum or park.
What you will need for your class
Materials will be provided for the first session, when you will be given a suggested materials list. You will be able to purchase some materials at cost price from the college art store.
It is advisable to wear old clothes or bring an apron or overalls.
