About the Course

This course is running both daytime and evening commencing 27 September 2018.

Come and join us in the Port and Lemon studio and discover the art of collage. Make your own papers to collage using various painting and hand printing techniques. We will help you produce lots of wonderful textures and patterns on paper using brushes, found objects and a selection of mediums, come and get messy and let your creativity go!

Once you have built up a collection of different papers you can start to play and invent your own individual collage style using paper cuts, layers and mark making. It will involve lots of cutting and sticking so something that’s easy for all abilities.

Week 1 – Thursday 27 September 10am – 12pm

An introduction to collage, we will spend a short time looking at other collage artists and discuss their merits, how they use pattern, colour and layering to create a picture, what sort of things could inspire us. We will also take a look at the different techniques we can use to change a boring piece of paper into something much more exciting. We will start to create our own papers, concentrating this week on mark making using different mediums and tools such as brushes, rollers, pencils, wax crayons etc.
Week 2 – Thursday 4 October 2018 10am – 12pm

This week we look at other forms of creating interesting papers by using various ways of hand printing including block and mono printing, stencilling and resist. It’s a chance to immerse yourself in the freedom of hand printing- never quite knowing what results you might achieve, always a fun way to spend a few hours!

Week 3 – Thursday 11 October 2018 10am – 12pm

So we now have a big resource of papers to use and lots of ideas buzzing around our heads. This week we start to think about what to collage, such as subject matter, colour scheme, pattern, imagery and the end product. Maybe you want to just make a piece of wall art, or perhaps the idea of creating a note book or journal sounds appealing. We will have lots of ideas, templates and inspiration to get you making something you can be proud of.

Week 4 – Thursday 18 October 2018 10am – 12pm

We carry on with our design ideas and expand our collage designs, perhaps trying new product ideas such as greeting or Christmas cards. We finish the course with a good look at what everyone has produced and discuss what techniques, colour schemes and designs work well and what to do next with your new collage skills!

We will be with you every step of the way, in a small class like this you will all get lots of help and attention and hopefully we can get you producing some amazing, colourful and contemporary designs and pictures to be proud of.
