About the Course
Learn how to combine many different materials to make collages. This is a perfect medium for expressing humour or satire, so you will be encouraged to experiment and find your own approach to this very easy, approachable and immediate way of working.
By the end of the course you will be able to
Select sources of inspiration, and choose how to record them
Develop these ideas through approaching them with different techniques and materials.
Present these ideas visually, using the sketchbook as a means of visual communication
Class format and activities
You will start by each selecting something special to look at, maybe from outside or in the studio - a flower, the architecture, other people, the light, the colours- it could be anything. Your tutor Ruth will introduce a variety of materials (watercolours, pencils, inks for drawing, painting and printing, acrylics, pastels etc.) and ways of using them, and you will be encouraged to choose your own way of recording what you have found to use as inspiration. We will discuss ideas as a group, helping each other with creative decisions, and offering ideas of ways to develop.
Constructive and supportive feedback from your tutor will help you succeed during the class.
Open to everyone, whatever your experience.
What you need to know before you enrol
The course will be held in studio D11 which is on the first floor accessible by stairs. We may also go outside into the Morley garden, weather permitting.
What you will need for your class
You will be provided with all materials including a sketchbook - but please bring your own if you prefer and an apron to protect your clothes. You are asked to bring an object with you- for example a photo, a pebble, a piece of embroidery - anything as a starting point to thinking about sources of inspiration.
What you can do next
Creating a sketchbook is an invaluable tool for any art activity. Your ability to select sources of inspiration, and an understanding of how to develop them, will be helpful in any other art class, drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles, jewellery etc.
