About the Course

LITERATURE BOUND. This course is designed to help you improve your bookbinding skills as well as creative ideas in bookbinding. On the first day, you will be given a set book (a piece of literature chosen by tutor) and start from discarding the original covering from the bookblock for new and creative work on it. As all students will work on the same title, there will be many creative ideas and various techniques to be observed, shared and practised. The course provides all the support you would like to achieve your own goals. The class will be a mixture of demonstrations and practical exercises.

how to transform book parts into design features
gain knowledge and confidence in a range of bookbinding skills
understand attributes of bookbinding materials and tools, and how to use them
understand the general terms and functions of parts of a book
develop your own interest in bookbinding
Class format and activities
In class, you will learn through demonstrations and practical work. There will be demonstration, group discussion and one-to-one tuition. You will also have detailed feedbacks from your tutor in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
Ideally have some practical bookbinding experience and be acquainted with basic forwarding and finishing skills. However, beginners with hand skills could be accepted too. Please discuss before enrolling if necessary.
What you need to know before you enrol
If you have any physical issues with working in a standing position, please discuss before enrolling the course.

What you will need for your class
If you have them: notebook, pencil, rubber, metal ruler, craft knife, bone folder, scissors.

There will be an opportunity to buy materials and tools needed at the first and subsequent classes. Tutor will give advice on things you may need.

What you can do next
Own project. More bookbinding courses. Or in another subjects, which you could combine with bookbinding skills, such as printmaking, painting, photography, Adobe InDesign.
