The student will develop an understanding of how to wire wrap stones and gems to create pendants that can be worn on chains or other materials such as leather thongs, the student will use a range of hand tools and specialist jewellery tools. The student will understand how to make bails and incorporate twisted wire designs to embellish and strengthen the piece. The course runs for 4 hours from 12.30pm until 4.30pm at Pontypool Museum.
The tutor will show students how to identify suitable stones and gems and how to wrap them to create beautiful pendants, beautiful jewellery that can be made from beach glass or even plant pot topping materials sold in garden centres.
The student will work with a range of wires to gain an understanding of the merits and disadvantages of the various common types of jewellery making wires available, but produce a final piece using 99% pure silver filled copper.
The student will then be able to finish the piece by creating a few simple finding and adding them to a leather thong. There are only 3 spaces on every course as this allows for maximum opportunity to develop the skills and engage with the trainer.
The trainer is an experienced jewellery maker and trainer, he has worked for a number of organisations within Wales delivering training on a range of subjects, including IT and Health and safety. He focuses on his interest area which is jewellery making and provides a range of specialist sessions on jewellery making including, silversmithing for beginners.
