About the Course

Wordpress is fast becoming the number one choice for free web and blog hosting. Work with media including pictures, sound and video and text, and your written words - managing your content to effectively target your audience. This intensive course will introduce you to the essential skills required to create an entirely free website/blog platform using the world's most popular Content Management System. User-friendly and fun; Wordpress allows you to design and manage content in an intuitive way.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Setup and install Wordpress
Add a pre-existing site template to WordPress
Work with Menus and organise your content in a user-friendly way
Create your first blog post and page
Work with media types - pictures, simple graphics, video and sound
Achieve basic skills and knowledge to help you maintain your site after the course.

Class format and activities
The class will be taught via a mix of presentation, active learning exercises, demonstrations, hand-outs, step-by-step instructions, pair working and group discussion. One-to-one tuition will be given to help develop ideas and skills. Manageable project work will sometimes be assigned between classes to help you progress. The classes are informal and allow for question and answer sessions, technical advice and support depending on your needs, and assessment and feedback on your progress. Some use of web-based presentation tools will be encouraged. Learning will be supported by course hand-outs, and the tutor will provide links to online resources.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
A keen interest in the subject is key to your success and the ability to attend the sessions regularly in order to get the most out of the course. No knowledge of HTML or web coding will be required. However, this course will be aimed at learners with some basic level of computer literacy (comfortable with using a mouse, creating and saving files, web browsing, familiar with using common software such as MS Word, uploading digital photographs, etc). As part of the course you will be asked to read tutorials, take notes, listen to instructions and discuss related topics, therefore students should have a reasonable level of skill in speaking, reading and writing in English. This course can be taken alongside with any of our digital design, film and photography courses and will help you to gain the confidence you need when working with digital tools for design and publication

What you need to know before you enrol
The Course will be taught on Apple Mac computers in a bright, comfortable modern studio. It would be helpful if you have some familiarity with Macintosh computers and know how to use standard menus and commands, however this is not an essential requirement as these skills can be picked up during the course. As part of the course you will be asked to read tutorials, take notes, listen to instructions and discuss related topics, therefore students should have a reasonable level of skill in speaking, reading and writing in English. As this is a computer-based course you will be encouraged to be aware of fatigue and eye strain and take breaks when necessary. You may wish to revise and practise at home to reinforce what you have learned during the lesson. Information about computers and relevant software will be provided by the tutor. Many of the Art & Design studios have limited accessibility.

What you will need for your class
It will be useful if you already had an idea of the subject matter on which you would like to base your website/blog.
It would be helpful for you to bring a pen, sketchbook and notepad, as you may wish to take notes and make initial designs. Also recommended is a storage device such as USB Memory Stick (minimum 8GB) or mini-hard drive. This is for storage of media during the course and of your work at the end. It would be beneficial but not essential to your studies if you possess the software for use at home. As a student of Morley College you are entitled to a discount on Adobe CC Software. Your tutor can advise you on how to apply for this.

What you can do next
We offer a range of courses in Website building. Use software for extensive web development and learn how to use HTML and CSS in our Coding for the Web Essential Skills course and the next level Wordpress development courses: Wordpress org.
