About the Course
Felting and free motion machine embroidery workshops. Creating watercolours in wool!
Crafts in the Valley offers these creative textile workshops at the quirky Cobbles and Clay Cafe in the historic town of Haworth in West Yorkshire.
These workshops are run by two experienced facilitators, myself Melanie Louise, and Linda Lewis. Refreshments and lunch are provided by Cobbles and Clay who serve up a wholesome bowl of soup with rustic bread, followed by a delicious slice of cake with tea and coffee!
Full day workshops start at 10.30am and finishing at approximately 4.30pm. Workshops can vary slightly and we also offer a two day Weekend of Wool course twice a year.
In the one day workshop you will have the opportunity to experiment with a range of textiles skills including wet felting, needle felting, hand embroidery and free motion machine embroidery. By the end of the day you will have created a beautiful piece of felted artwork.
You will have the opportunity to experiment with a selection of beautiful dyed merino wool, alpaca or wool from British sheep, that are naturally coloured and just as lovely. All wool fibres are purchased from the wonderful Wingham Wool Works or World of Wool. Only the best quality materials are used on this workshop.
A flat piece of felt will be made using the simple process of wet felting, manipulating and matting fibres together using soapy water and a bit of elbow grease!
In the afternoon, extra detail is added to the felt using needle felting and machine embroidery or hand embroidery if you prefer.
Most workshop participants opt to create a beautiful piece of felted art, some prefer to turn their felt into a more functional item. The choice is yours! Lots of inspiration and top quality materials will be available for you to work with.
This year (2019) I have teamed up with Linda Lewis who runs Creative Chameleon shop and gallery in Haworth. She is a former yarn designer, and a wool expert! Linda and I make a great creative team and will help you create beautiful pieces of artwork out of wool. We are also fabulous hosts who create an inspiring, friendly, fun and supportive environment.
The workshops are run in the delightful Cobbles and Clay cafe in Haworth. Home to the Bronte sisters, Haworth is steeped in history. Cobbles and Clay is on Haworth's famous cobbled high street, surrounded by quirky shops and art and craft galleries. Overlooked by rolling hills and moorland you feel like you have stepped back in time when you visit Haworth. Many workshop guests come to stay for the weekend and enjoy not just the craft day but all that Haworth has to offer.
This workshop is offered to individuals and private groups and designed for art and craft lovers, beginners or experienced crafters. It is great for those new to art and craft who simply want to enjoy a creative day out and try something new. The workshops have proved popular with mothers and daughters, couples, family and friends who wish to spend some quality time together. Lots of participants also come on their own and enjoying meeting friendly, new people.
I am a fully qualified Art and Design teacher who has taught GCSE and A Level Art for the past 15 years. I have been running art and craft workshops for adults for the past 6 years. Feedback from workshop participants is always extremely positive. I have received 5* ratings on the Craft Course website and Facebook reviews.

I did the felting course, which covers wet and needle felting along with using machine embroidery as embellishment. Lovely course, very clear instructions and lots of help. Books and pictures were provided for inspiration or we were free to use our own from home. This is a really enjoyable and satisfying set of techniques to learn. Best of all, you go home with a piece of finished work using them. The venue was Cobbles and Clay in Haworth and a delicious lunch was provided. Looking forward to my next course already.

Our Weekend of Wool at Cobbles and Clay in Haworth was absolutely fantastic! We all got a very warm welcome from Mel, Linda and the cafe staff. The tuition was first class and covered all abilities. Mel and Linda were so helpful, patient and full of wonderful ideas and the pictures we all created were amazing.
The food (especially the cake!) provided by Cobbles and Clay was delicious too! I left feeling inspired to practise some of the ideas at home and I am really looking forward to joining Crafts in the Valley for another felting workshop soon.

Just attended this wonderful workshop and can highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in learning more about felting. I was amazed how much we covered in one day ... including a yummy lunch ! Melanie Louise is an organised and thoughtful teacher who seemed to guide everyone through their different projects. I came away feeling much more confident in my ability and with a lovely piece of art I’m going to treasure. Todmorden is also a gem and well worth a visit with lots of arty shops and a relaxed vibe. Loved the course and will be doing more workshops with crafts in the valley 😊

Learning to felt has been on my to do list for a long time and I couldn't have picked a better course. Melanie is a natural teacher and structured the day perfectly. The teaching process flowed seamlessly, stimulating our own creativity and we all produced a beautiful piece of work.
The venue is lovely and the refreshments and lunch were delicious.
I would recommend this course to anyone and it would certainly make an alternative group activity for an adult birthday party.

A Brilliant day and thoroughly enjoyed meeting Mel and the other crafty ladies on this felting workshop. As a total beginner due to the excellent and patient tuition was guided through the whole process and came away with a lovely felted picture. A five star day.

Having never done a craft course or worked with felt before i did a day course with crafts in the Valley rather hesitantly. Melanie put me completely at ease and i overcame any shyness or self doubts really quickly. Mel is a fantastic, warm, engaging and friendly teacher. I felt completely included and at ease with the other women in the group. I enjoyed felting and found myself inspired and absorbed in the work. I am really proud of the piece i made and got a lot out of the whole day. I felt looked after and nurtured, I learnt a lot, met nice people, ate good food and laughed. My felted picture is now in a frame at home and i am happy to think i made it :) I wouldn't hesitate to go on another course and would completely recommend to anyone considering trying it.

I had a really enjoyable day and learned how to wet and dry felt and freehand sew. Melanie was very informative and was able to help everyone individually, where needed. There was also very tasty food and drink provided at the cafe.

Highly recommend. . . What a brilliant day. Good tuition, good resources, good company and good food!!
A satisfying piece of feltwork to take home ... feeling inspired to do more!

I really enjoyed this workshop. Mel explained everything clearly and took the time to speak to all the participants offering advice and suggestions.
There were drinks and pastries/biscuits accessible at all times and the lunch at a local cafe was very pleasant, followed by afternoon snack of chocolate cake with fresh strawberries. Lovely.
Throughout the day Mel made sure that we were all happy with her instructions, and was on hand to make sure we understood what we were doing, and why. We all came away proudly clutching our own pieces of art.
Bev Speak - - #12822
Melanie hosted an excellent workshop on making a felt picture, everyone came away with a real sense of achievement at having learnt something completely new. The refreshments were very welcome, the company was good and Melanie's tuition was superb - a lovely way to spend a day!

I can't recommend Melanie's workshops onboard the lovely Crafty Snail narrowboat highly enough! I have taken her workshops in both felting (with a friend) and mosaics (with my husband) and have all thoroughly enjoyed them, coming home at the end of each day with pieces of art we were proud to put up on the wall despite being complete beginners. Melanie herself is a fantastic teacher and a pleasure to spend time with and the workshops are incredibly good value, especially when you consider the lovely lunch, drinks and snacks included. Treat yourself or someone you love to a relaxing crafty day in beautiful, unique surroundings now!

Having attended 2 felt crafty days, I would highly recommend Melanie's workshops. I was a complete beginner and came home with 2 felt pictures, having been guided carefully at each stage of creating the natural world scenes from scratch. It was great to have a very small group on board the Crafty Snail, with plenty of room to work despite the narrow space, and a lovely choice of materials to choose from. The supply of warm drinks and goodies to nibble on helped the concentration, whilst the woodburning stove kept us cosy. We enjoyed a delicious meal at the Olive Branch during lunchtime before returning to find our pictures ready for the next stage of creation. I found both occasions full of inspiration and they built my confidence in art and craft.
