About the Course

This course is designed for students who have some experience in patchwork, quilting and wish to expand their knowledge, skill level and develop innovative, contemporary, modern, dynamic art quilts. We will look at great variety of techniques, processes, materials and styles. The focus of this practical course is on experimenting imaginatively with design, fabric painting, printing, dyeing, quilting, applique, embellishment, to both help generate ideas and samples and also to produce ‘complete’ pieces of work. There will also be time to develop your own projects in a stimulating and sympathetic environment. Students will be given a challenge/theme to work through each term and be encouraged to develop a sketchbook of idea and techniques. The design and development process with an emphasis on personal growth will be encouraged throughout the three terms. The course has been developed to span the whole academic year, or you can take terms separately for particular topics.

By the end of the course you will be able to
develop a variety of printing techniques with the emphasis on using in patchwork, quilting or applique
Paint fabric using resists and discharge techniques to be developed into quilt hangings
Use recycled materials, traditional and non-traditional
Explore work of textile/quilt artists
Make and develop your own work
Class format and activities
After looking at and discussing examples, samples, the tutor will demonstrate weekly tasks. Students explore and learn a wide variety of dyeing, printing, and discharge techniques, on their own and in combinations and to experiment with colour, texture, line and form.
There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge and experience, through discussion, show and tell and group critique.
You will be encouraged to work and develop your own work/style to a high standard.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
